"Oooookay, staff. Now would be a good time to be a pal and shrink already. Oh, how did father make this look so easy?"
"As Chatte Noire, Lala had a bit of a steep learning curve when it came to her staff at first. Mainly in terms of extending and retracting it. It responds to the Cat Bearer's will like an extra limb but erratic emotions can make it more wonky at times. Especially with minors where their power is more restricted. Sometimes it shrunk to fast or too soon. Sometimes it extended upwards past the tallest tree when it was most inappropriate.
It didn't help that Lala has a secret fear of heights. The memory of how she barely survived a fall that claimed her mother's life was hazy yet vivid all at once. What wasn't hard to remember was the fear. Especially when she got up too high. It was something Lungri's champions sometimes too advantage of such as with her first outing as Chatte Noire where she was backed up to a cliff.
Mowgli had bailed her out with his Fang, a homemade boomerang, but caused her to fall off the edge. Through the panic, she managed to extend the staff according to her will and stop her fall just slightly below the cliff. Sadly, one look below jogged her memory as to what she was freaking out over and caused her to lean back too much. Thankfully, Mowgli saved the trouble of finding out of cat's really do land on their feet by catching her.
The new Cat Bearer and Plagg together has a lot to prove, especially to Guardian Akela, that they will compliment Ladybug in battle rather than clash. More importantly, they have much to prove to themselves."
Lala's fear of height is meant to not be a one off thing like one episode she overcomes it full stop. Rather it's something she has to grit her teeth and bear with it. It's something she confesses to Ladybug, depending their bond in a moment of vulnerablity. It's also a semi-homage to Code Lyoko where Ulrich Stern is revealed to have Vertigo.
