THESE paws have a story.
They were originally crafted for the very lovely and amazing Paw Bakery, who wanted a set of monster paws to go with a very scary OC of theirs that, if memory serves, they wanted to make a fursuit partial out of to sell?? This one was of the TWO times I've ever had a package shipped back to me after being mailed out to a client (if i had a nickel... something something... weird that it happened twice.) The first time I had a package returned to me was actually my own fault in the late 2010's when I was just starting out. THIS time I could not tell you why the item was shipped back to me. I could hazard a guess or two, but the main meat is essentially that Spanish customs did not want what I was selling. Mailed these puppies out twice and and they were sent back twice. Costing both me and Dawn too much cash in shipping.
Eventually, we gave up. Dawn agreed to let me resell the paws and pay her back the money I owed her once they were sold. Of course that was only about one half of my woes, because the paws still haven't sold.
The paws are still available on my etsy despite it being nearly two years since their make and my reducing the price a few times. It's the most irresponsible I've ever been with a client. But at the time I had expected the refurbished paws to sell well. Dawn knows that the paws are still for sale and has, thankfully, not harassed me over the issue. Being able to sell these bad boys would be a huge weight off my shoulders at this point. When I first started making fursuits, I would hold my earnings until the finished item was shipped and had arrived (except the nonrefundable down payment, which would be used to purchase supplies). In that way, I could make refunds at my discretion very easily. But there was a period where I attempted to make fursuits my ONLY income and, well, shit hit the fan. At the height of COVID I was making decently good monthly income, but as we came out the other side and the recession really started to bite, ppl stopped spending money on luxury goods.
I realize I could probably get some serious public flak for admitting to this embarrassing oversite, but the fact of the matter is that I've entered retirement from fursuit making in the hopes of pursuing a career which will pay me better and more consistently. Even if these paws NEVER sell, I will never forget what I owe Dawn and it will be paid back in time. But until then, I live hand-to-mouth. Being transparent about my mistakes I feel is important for the sake of understanding what my career as a maker was like as a whole.
