The Dark Wolf Project is a story of a world deprived of nature, where gods walk the earth leaving ruin in their wake. Sound familiar? Every painting symbolically reveals a real-life threat to our world, and forms a collectable narrative of art. Best of all, every purchase helps fund efforts to preserve wild animals. "Primal Equilibrium"
The final painting in the first chapter of the Project, Primal Equilibrium explores the balance of natural systems.
"The main focus is not the subjects but the colour and positioning of them. The background forms a spectrum from blue to red, reflecting the state of relative balance and order that natural systems generally maintain; out of place, are the dark pedestal and golden deer statue. The wolf’s colouration corresponds to the landscape, being of naturally low density as a species and contributing to balance through predation.
Gold was specifically chosen to illustrate the high value we have continually placed on game and grazing animals, whose proliferation necessitated the extermination or displacement of their natural predators. Today, in habitat managed primarily for anthropogenic use (such as grazing land or hunting) we invariably see a large imbalance in the species present, with apex predators often missing from the food web altogether. This imbalance is shown with the deer’s elevated position, placing it in a part of the colour spectrum in which it does not belong – or a level of abundance it should not maintain.
Where the wolf has gorged itself on the torn belly of the deer, the carcass has undergone a colour change to be synchronous with the natural order – forming the outline of the Silent Mountain symbol on the pedestal. This in itself suggests the construct, or human manipulation of nature, has the potential to be a monument to sustainability rather than absolute dominance."
