Shema's parents always felt a little guilty at being able to carry only a single pregnancy to term and feared that their daughter would have a lonely childhood. To help combat this, they both encouraged her to experience the most out of life: her father, counseling wisdom and moderation, her mother, decadence and enthusiasm. For better or worse, Shema's personality is 75% her mother and 25% her father, but it led to her being a friendly, outgoing child, always ready to try new things, especially if it would impress her friends.

As they entered high school, the friends she had known for most of her life started experimenting with more "adult" things. Shema found that she was cautious about most of it, except for being curious to try catnip for the first time after being assured it was a lot of fun.

One dreary day after school, a friend slipped her a hand-rolled joint of catnip. Excited, Shema walked home until she found a small alley which she judged secret enough. Clumsily lighting the little roll of paper and leaves, she nervously placed it to her mouth and inhaled, starting a habit that would peak in college, but remain with her in a quieter way for the rest of her life.
