A concept from the "Welevos" TTRPG where individuals from any race (in this case, a gnoll and a human) can willingly merge with a type of alien fungus in order to achieve higher states of consciousness. The fungus doesn't cause any harm to the host, its intention is to help other lifeforms achieve higher spiritual states.

No unfortunately, but the welevo and the fungus must go through an extremely rigorous communication process before a merge can take place. If the two aren't compatible, a merge won't happen. There's a lot that goes into the preparation of something this life changing. Also worth mentioning that the fungus and the welevo remain as separate minds even after the merge.
