So this guy brought in this guitar for a "setup." A set up involves adjusting a lot of stuff to get the guitar more playable. This includes:
String action (string height)
Intonation (The guitars ability to play in tune)
Neck relief (The very slight bow in the neck needed for string clearance)
Pickup height (Getting the pickups to have balanced tone and volume)
And sometimes will include:
Nut action (how high the strings are elevated above the frets by the nut)
Tremolo adjustments
Right here I am measuring the string hight that he had when he brought it in. you do this on the 12th fret normally with a ruler capably of measuring in 32nds of an inch. His guitar was 3/32 on the bass side and 1/16 on the treble side. This is a perfectly respectable set up but he wanted the action even lower than that so I gave him my "low electric setup" which is 5/64ths on the bass side and 3/64ths on the treble side. This is abut the lowest I would ever go. bring the strings down too much can hurt your tone and cause buzzing.
