Next I take some tape that I have stuck to my shirt a few times and cover the pickups and make a condom for the end of the fretboard. This will keep loose steel wool from getting everywhere and any that does escape won't stick to the magnetic pickups. Blue painters tape is really the shit to use for this but in its absence, white masking tape will do just fine as long as you remove some of its tack by sticking it to clothing first.
After the tape job is all done I take some 0000 steel wool and give the frets and fretboard a good polish. It is good to *NOT* do this over the workbench but rather position the guitar so only the body is on the bench and the neck is being held up by you. This way the steel wool all goes on the floor and not into you nice clean finish saving towel.
Once that's done, take a shop towel and brush the remaining steel wool of onto the floor and carefully remove the tape around the neck and then from the pickups.
