The commission itself wasn't ordered 7 years later, but that's when it takes place. Kasia's an adult and starting to turn into a grease monkey, Janusz is back from serving in the Marines somewhere overseas, Janek is a freelance artist, Jan has mostly inherited the family farm, and Kate has just met her future husband back in '82 and brought him to the present with her (it's a long story).
