A Patrat and Lillipup were racing through the woods one day. There was no plans for the day, no games in mind, just running around just for the fun of it. However, they heard a loud crash from afar. Just near the road where their folks told them to never go.
But kids will be kids be they human or Pokémon, letting their curiosity take them towards the source. They bet that a Pokémon battle was going down and wanted to see one between legit Trainers. They’d get distracted along the way until they heard sobbing coming from the trees.
It was female. Human. Now this has their full attention. Their ears were sharp enough but it was the unfamiliar scent that narrowed it down to a lone hollow tree in a denser part of the woods. They looked into the dark inside of the tree, their eyes seeing through the dark.
A brown haired little girl had her face buried in her bent knees, sitting in the dark with choking cries. Patrat and Lillipup became more concerned than curious.
[She’s mighty pint-sized for a Trainer,] Patrat remarked. [Mighty scared too.]
The young girl slowed her crying to look up at whoever was spying on her.
[I don’t think she’s a Trainer,] Lillipup remarked, feeling sorry for their find. [She’s probably a kid who got lost in these parts.]
Hilda sniffled in intrigue when she saw the two Normal-types in their back and forth.
[This far out?] Patrat hmmmmed with suspicion. [Somethin’ don’ smell right.]
[Well, I think she smells just fine,] Lillipup pouted before going into the hollow up to the girl. [Are you okay, Miss..?] He put on his most innocent face with his tongue out, something his folks taught him when approaching humans.
The young girl’s eyes still had a few tears but her sad frown has softened into a bemused stare. Still sad yet… endeared by these critters who had come over to check on her well-being.
“H-Hilda…” she sniffed, her nose dripping. “M… my name is Hilda…”
[It’s good to meet you, Hilda,] Lillipup replied, his tail wagging.
[Wait a sec there…] Patrat began in curiosity, heading into the tree. [Did she just talked back to you?]
[No way,] Lillipup dismissed, looking at Patrat incredulously. [People can't talk to Pokemon.]
“Well… not all people can,” Hilda answered, gulping awkwardly.
[See, she-] Lillipup began before realizing Hilda wasn’t talking to herself. [Whoa!]
[Well, pluck mah Pidoves!] Patrat exclaimed, coming up to Hilda with a more excited look in his eyes. [What a find!]
Hilda couldn't help but smile a touch more over the two's excitement over their "discovery" when she felt her stomach rumbling. Rather audibly too as it got the attention of Lillipup and Patrat.
"You... wouldn't happen to know where I could find some food, would you?"
Leaving the tree, Hilda was let to Patrat's mother and father who gave the girl a few berries to restore her strength. However, they were the sort that rarely ventured towards civilization. As such, Hilda had to pretty much wander around the woods to find some way to Nuvema Town. Patrat and Lillipup were keen to join her, resulting in many memorable misadventures. Hilda's ability to speak with Pokemon helped but the untamed wild put her through her paces.
One thought kept her going. Her mother was waiting for her. The car crash might've been nasty but her mother was once Champion of Unova. She'd been in worse scrapes before. So for now, she'd bear it without shoes or socks. Especially with new friends by her side.
It'd just be a matter of time.
