TUNIC Narrative Guide - Act 4, Part 1: Recall and Explore
Summary: Join the Ruin Seeker (that's our protagonist fox!) on his journey through a strange and vaguely familiar land. His inner thoughts are laid bare as we explore the unknown. Each step brings new mysteries to solve, new challenges to face. - This story is intended as a companion piece to the video game TUNIC, but can also function as a guide if you are stuck or a teaser to get you interested.
If you've reached this point and you haven't faced off against your final foe, turn around and leave now. There are spoilers within these pages that will negatively influence your experience with the game.
How long has it been now, since I've been trapped here? Does time itself even matter now? Life has become nothing but this prison, slowly spinning, twisting. I sit with contemplation and regret, pondering the path that has led me to this spot.
At the beginning, I awoke in a strange land, one in which nothing was familiar. The only thing that mattered was the present. Upon exploring, I began to find mystical "pages", information transcribed in a strange language, though some portions could be understood. These pages guided me in my exploration.
At first, they led me to a sword, and then to two belltowers. The belltowers opened a temple door, and inside was the locking mechanism for a prison. Within the prison was the deified fox lady whose visage adorned the temple itself, restrained within another dimension. This goddess appeared to be friendly, even familiar, so I made it my quest to rescue her.
The pages guided me in that task, leading me to the different corners of the land. Along the way, I prayed at obelisks that provided power to the far reaches. Guarding the three Questagon keys were three figures of power.
The first, the Siege Engine. A massive construct found within an abandoned vault. Ritualists worshiping the obelisks had made it their home. Their prayers did not function as mine did, and it wasn't until my arrival that the door into the vault could be opened. Upon defeating the Siege Engine, I obtained a key that allowed me access to the sealed Questagon.
The second, the Librarian. The Questagon was originally kept within a vault at the edge of the beach, but it had been overrun with frog people. At some point, the Librarian had stolen the thing and absconded with it into his floating library. He may have been working on understanding its purpose, but when I arrived to claim it for myself, he refused to part with it for the sake of my quest.
The third, the Boss of the Scavengers. She, and the Questagon she guarded - or hoarded - was found under the earth. The scavengers had raided the quarry, blasted open the ziggurat, and delved into a place of incredible wonder. It was here that I learned the truth of the obelisks, that within them were fox-like beings of void energy. That their very blood is what powers the technology on the surface. The teleporters, the 'checkpoints'. At the end of my path, the vault, and her guarding the last of the hexagonal trio.
It should be noted that she may not have fallen in that battle. Unlike the Librarian, or even the obelisks, no mana bits appeared. It's possible that she may have faked her death. It's also possible that she may have lost her soul long ago.
Returning to the temple with the three items of power, I unlocked the rings of the prison one at a time. When nothing happened, I checked in the other realm. The goddess was missing from where I would usually find her, and so I went to the location of the strange floating sword.
Once inside, the way back was cut off and the goddess lashed out at me. For all I could tell, it was a betrayal. I had been guided this far by an invisible hand, seemingly following the only path available to me, but I was cut down in a flash. Bitterness settled onto my soul, a feeling I've been fighting with for untold weeks now.
When I next awoke, the world had been torn asunder. Night had fallen, my spirit had been split apart, and the souls of the fallen now peppered the land. At first, I tried to seek information, some sort of insight into why I had been betrayed, but their words could not reach me, nor mine them.
My way forward was blocked no matter which way I turned. I eventually found a bridge of moonlight that led me to a graveyard, somehow untouched by the cataclysm. At the far end was a grand cathedral, and inside an item of legend. The place felt like the origin to the darker side of this land's secrets. In its depths, a challenge of combat stood in my way. The prize, an item that granted me enhanced mobility.
Just outside I found a surging vortex of energy that beckoned me into it. On the other side, the statue of a hero matching my own appearance. Receiving the pure offering from within, I restored a part of my spirit. A new quest, with five more locations to visit.
Racing from place to place, I saw the full extent of the damage. I realized that several of the obelisks had exploded, void energies leaking out into the world, tearing apart reality. It seemed that the source of the energy had overflowed, tearing apart the central obelisk and those most closely connected to it. My only unanswered question was why?
I assumed it was the goddess's fault. She had struck me down, and the cataclysm happened shortly after, so surely it was her doing. But after so long spend contemplating, I begin to doubt. Of course, at the time, I was only able to push forward in my quest for revenge. After reassembling my spirit, I headed back to the other realm to challenge her again.
The battle was intense, our fur bristled and the arena teemed with our magical energies clashing. When the void began to take her over, I was already being pushed to my very limit. Yet, somehow, I triumphed. With us both down to one strike left, it was my sword that landed first. I had claimed victory.
Or... so I had thought.
My spirit was again drained, and the prison that had surrounded The Heir now claimed a new occupant, me.
So here I sit. Time passes. Or it doesn't. I can't even tell. I continue to think back on what I had done, and the things I hadn't. Am I the bad guy in all of this? Was there something else I could have done? If given the chance, would I do anything differently? I close my eyes, and my mind begins to drift. Existentialism takes hold, and I feel myself watching from outside my body. As everything fades, I try to hold onto my sense of self. I want to return. I want to search for another answer. Another path...
My head spins. The ground under my paws is cold and wet. I force myself to open my eyes, and they are blinded by a pale but bright blue. Shapes come into focus as they adjust, and I realize that I am yet again at the beach. The sky is still broken, night still holds the land. I stare down my snout, check my hands and legs. I'm whole. I'm back. Zip-zip! Celebration overcomes me and I shout joyously into the timid sea.
I race down the long bridge and try to dance with the ghostly fox outside the stick-abode. He watches me with confusion, and I start to feel a bit silly. For now, I should look around town. I held too much of a lust for revenge before, so I never actually looked around.
Above me, I spot a ghost staring at one of the goddess statues. She seems impressed, but it's so broken looking that I can't tell what is exciting for her. Perhaps the size? The next fox I spot is playing around at the well. My path takes me into the center of town, and I recall that I activated a teleporter over in the West Gardens that I never actually visited. Curiosity builds, so I kneel and make my way over.
At first, I think it to be an immediate dead end. Then my brain wakes up a bit more and remembers that I can dash to the pillars. Following the only path ahead of me, I do actually reach a dead end. Hmm. I shift my view and... Aha! I think I remember seeing this before.
Use the power of the Holy Cross and traverse The Golden Path. On this page, a booklet is held aloft. At the top, part of a phrase: or Seeking An End. With the power of the Holy Cross, I should be able to accomplish, well, something. I admit, I don't quite understand, but it does seem like a goal.
New Goal: Find the Holy Cross.
New Goal: Share my Wisdom.
The second page is even more vague. The top starts a title with "The Fairy", and in the rest it mentions the Holy Cross and talks about a Seeking spell. The image is of a cave behind either a curtain or a waterfall.
Returning to my search for the Holy Cross - decidedly not in the possession of the goddess - I make my way back to town. My exploration continues to the north. I cannot delve into the Old Well, as the ladder is gone. The lack of wooden construction during this cursed night is unfortunate. So instead, I make my way further around. There, on a tiny rock, lies another page.
Now, isn't this interesting... The hero of the Cathedral? We have the goddess depicted here. She's drinking the blood of the void beasts, with one crucified in the back, oozing a river of power. She's decisively more evil looking here than on the previous page. She's wearing the Hero's Laurels, and the worship has shifted to the blood-filled chalices.
The next section is titled The World Is Thrown Into Ruin. The art depicts the tentacled beasts of three eyes, that which the Garden Knight takes its form from. Below, an army of Siege Engine looking constructions. Is this an army build by the goddess? Did she use it to take over the world? Or did this army come from the same dimension as the void foxes and wage war against her?
The Heir, the Heir-To-The-Heir, the Holy Cross... Here, we see the goddess being sealed by three older foxes. The ones from the statue. Yet I still can't figure out what the Holy Cross has to do with any of this, or even what it is!
The last section is Awaiting a Worthy Successor. The Heir-To-The-Heir (myself?) stands before the sealing temple. It mentions The Golden Path once again. If it's not enough to simply beat her, then this Golden Path thing must be the secret.
New Goal: Seek The Golden Path.
All of these new pages continue to point to the same things, the Holy Cross and The Golden Path. Hopefully the next information I find will give me a little more direction. As it stands, I'm still forced to wander.
Further ahead, I notice a large waterfall. Recalling the image of the booklet, and the philosophy of "secrets everywhere", I try to poke my nose behind it. It indeed holds a cave, and perhaps I was here before but I cannot recall. The wall is decorated with an angular pattern, and what looks like a small altar is in the middle. Still, nothing here appears to be interactable. I'll at least make a note.
Discovery: A strange cave is hidden behind a waterfall. Inside, it holds an altar that may hold significance. I should return later.
The tomb is sealed, so I continue to circle around. Past the belltower, past the windmill. Wait, wasn't there a path behind it? There it is, leading underneath the Western Belltower.
Augh! That's right! The cataclysm! This is just horrible, and the mask does nothing at all. I push ahead regardless, and across the way I find a pair of foxes sitting next to the encroaching void. Have they lost their minds? I point at the void behind them and they simply shrug at me. Back under the belltower, I take a moment to stare into the void. This is definitely the epicenter, or very close to it. Finding all of this deeply unsettling, I make my way back to the goddess altar to recover my sanity and health.
I continue to circle around the town. One fox is sitting against the wall by the shop looking sad. Further towards the beach, one finally seems concerned about the void. I then find three more ghosts hanging around a drained fountain. The first lays on her back, trying to sleep, while the other two are asking me questions. One even seems to know about the Holy Cross! In the center of the fountain is another page. I take a hopeful breath and zip onto the small island to grab it.
This page seems mostly useless, as it hints at how to restore my spirit. Yeah, I pray at the Hero's Graves. Next!
A shiver rolls down my spine and into the tip of my tail. The page mentions the Holy Cross, and it shows ... some arrows. Some doors. There's a scribble of a few plus-shaped things. Cross shaped?
One of these depicted doors is right here, in front of me. I stand in front of it and think. Something pops into my head, a curious thought emerging.
If I trace these motions inside my mind...?
A grinding noise. The door, it's moving! Wh-what?? It... It opened!!
Discovery: There's an input sequence that opens various doors within the world. Enter it by using the D-Pad.
I enter, cautiously. The chamber inside is decorated with the symbol of the three hexagons, and on a pedestal is another page. I swallow, spine still electrified from the thrill of discovery.
Is that pattern the Holy Cross? Down, right, up, left, up, right? My head swirls and spins, still unsure how to process what just happened. I opened the door, with my mind! The page points out a few more things, but about the only one that makes sense is where it mentions The Golden Path. Something about page 49.
I check to be sure, but I don't have that page yet. My only lead right now are these doors. It shows two others on page 43, and I try to recall where they are located. It's been so long... Ah, right, the other page.
A fight with The Heir. My rightful place, my fluffing tail. Going that route only got me imprisoned! Clearing The Game or Seeking An End. I'm unsure what that is supposed to mean, but having already accomplished option A, I must now follow a route to option B. Traversing The Golden Path.
For now, I'll try to remember where those other two doors are at, then make my way to them...
New Goal: Open the other two doors depicted on page 43.

Author's Notes: I'm thrilled to be finally continuing this project. It's been a long time coming. Most if this section was a recap in order to set the tone and return my mind to the world of our fox hero.
For this and the rest of the upcoming Act, I've taken the time to curate the discoveries to channel a natural flow. More than likely, your personal experience will differ greatly, especially if you let yourself get distracted before first taking the fight to The Heir.
And that's okay! This game is great in that you can play it however you choose and still come to the same epiphanies.
Something fun I want to point out is how I've emphasized The Golden Path in every mention. As you read it, picture a choir vocalizing in the background. The phrase is a sacred one, and you'll come to find out why it's treated with reverence.
I'll keep the rambling short for this week. The rest of Act 4 is pretty much done, and will be uploaded every Thursday. A big thank you to those who are following along, and a big hooray for those who have found joy in TUNIC.
