I recently read a proposal for a lithium saltwater rocket engine using a mix of fission and fusion to achieve outstanding performance. But commentators on Linkedin and Mastodon pointed out major flaws, mainly that lithium compounds react violently with water and that achieving fusion inside a fission reactor is unlikely. But parts of the original concept could be salvaged to design a lithium-based mixed-power rocket engine, using both chemical and nuclear reactions to generate thrust.
