The whole method is purely based on my experience on observing on transparent objects, I afraid I can't give you the scientific explanations.
but maybe same as mirror, glossy things are reflect lights without dim because surface is smooth, same thing as that. Transparence things are looks more transparently too because surface is smooth.(example: normal glass and frosted glass)

The water is the dome. It could be a square too. You'll 'miss' ground at the edges because of the refraction.
