Black-veiled baxxid? I don't like the looks of this... this smells like an execution... please tell me I'm wrong. If it really means death penalty, I guess we can still hope for someone barging in the last moment to stop it, but who knows how it will end... ehh, he did not deserve this.

It is Kalgkur's response to the judgement, not their desires that will determine if Kalgkur's soul shall be snuffed out. It looks like Kalgkur is ready for the judgement and has accepted whatever that judgement may be. It is my hope that Kalgkur's decision to forfeit his life for his actions, will show the Elders that he does get it and that he isn't trying to duck, dismiss or make excuses. If one shows remorse and acceptance of the consequences of their actions, that should be considered in the sentencing. I hope, at least.

We knew we'd be seeing them at some point. For some reason, I get the impression they don't talk much, either. Also, I'm not sure Kas & Co will be able to rescue this lost soul, like they have others. Not without direct intervention from Trademaster Viracroix, anyway.
Hmmm.
Perhaps that is precisely what is necessary, here? A little "tough love" from someone the Baxxid respect?
At the end of the day, the thief was exact that: a thief. And they stole a very valuable object, the penalty for which would most certainly have been death anyway. The Trademaster isn't the sort of ruler to keep that kind of troublemaker around, unless they prove to be useful. And they are no longer useful, save perhaps for growing those strange fungus.
Also, it's not as if humans aren't used to seeing violence. A few discussions with the Baxxid, and Kalgur, and Viracroix can put his foot down on anything drastic, and offer a more equitable solution.
Either way, one way or another, Kalgur's life is about to change significantly.

If Viracroix stepped in, THAT would be an injustice all its own. It honestly does not matter what the thief's fate would have been in human hands, the Baxxids are not human, and they are sovereign, with their own culture.
Frankly, I'm seeing a disturbing lack of empathy extended toward the thief. Kas gets all the forgiveness, and they were a soldier. How many innocents do you think they killed to save their own hide? Because they would have been killed if they refused to do their "duty"?
Empathy for him, but no empathy for the thief. Nobody knows his circumstances. Would it change your mind if he stole for the purpose of feeding orphans? Neither of us know for sure, and yet there is an impulse to simply toss them aside! Stealing is a far lesser crime than murder, and yet Kas is guilty of the latter.
The Baxxids are a reasonable and kind people. I doubt anything truly terrible will befall Kalgkur, since they are truly traumatized and regretful by what has happened.

But outside the especially heinous crime of stealing the people's emergency food supplies, Trademaster Viracroix has demonstrated remarkable acumen in navigating social complexities. If death is what Kalgur truly desires, well, there's not much he can do about it. He can certainly make the offer, but it cannot be forced.
As for Kas, that's a very, very long and precipitous leap of logic.
Dinnland was not the aggressor in the conflict, they were the victims. As such, they would have been defending their homeland against their enemies, NOT invading and conquering another. So your assertion that Kas killed innocents is facetious at best.

Lets be blunt, too many have felt that wrong, there stuff, perhaps even an item they needed to servive taken from them by some asshole who is, in most all cases, to flocking lazy to bother trying to find a job. You bet your ass people are not going to feel sorry for the thief. This is not someone trying to swipe food for his family, this is someone swiping something because they are too lazy to find a job, or to make stuff to sell. Think I am nuts? Wish I was. I was that poor once apon a time, thoes looking to feed there familys don't rob from small shops, or the poor, they go for big shops, and the more well off. The score is better, and you have to do it less often. Thoes stealing from small shops and the poor are doing it cause they are too lazy to get a job and do not care about how many people they murder or make suffer along the way.

Yah, I do probably come across a little strong, its just, I am so very tired of watching petty crime turn to big crime, then to worse. Worse, the small shop keepers, the poor, one theft could spell the end of there life. Most little shops are pretty dang close to the edge, the big box stores have forced them to cut it close, one theft could cost them the business, and then they are on the streets living rough. Never mind how it is for the poor, living nearly day to day, struggling to find enough money to eat, let along keep a roof overhead, and the lights on. 50 bucks can literaly mean life or death under thoes siduations. Take it from someone that used to feed themselves on just 50 a month. Gods you really grow to hate the taste of raman, or salted pasta. Or plain beans. At that level, a theft, is basicly an indirect murder.

It's not OK, but it's understandable. I've been ripped off a number of times. It's more than often due to a societal problem than an individual one. I've been ripped off by both people who were just profiting, as well as people who were likely just desperate.

The theif fucked around under the carefully cultivated presumption that the giant murder worms dont partake in violence and found out that this one was poorly chosen and untrained and that the giant murder worms only need to be slightly clumsy in a panic to end you.
Its summary execution for what is probably non fellony death, even with more extenuating circumstances the investigation would need to be a thourough thing .
The failuresof this circumstance are mostly on the systems worm and human in failure to train, and it involves interspecies polotics and more importantly the Braxids religion for lack of a better term 'if needed im a bit of a johny come latly and havent really gone back from where i jumped on"

If only they could be captured and broadcast into the minds and hearts
of all who would judge a criminal of this innocent kind... Tragedies could have been prevented.
I don't recognize the meaning of the newcomer, but their presence seems to have indicated
a transgression of the conceivable and imaginable boundaries of punishment
that poor Kalgkur had set for himself.
And his pose in the first frame...

That containment chamber... Does it really have that inner pillar to delineate
the path of endless contemplative pacing around for the prisoner,
sort of like Scrooge McDuck's worry room?
All those inner thoughts and feelings of contrition and regret...

hmm, probably a bit late to point this out but I'm kind of surprised accidental Baxxids attacks are more common. It seems if one fucks up they're tossed into the guard for a bit as an act of community service but from what I saw in this comic it looks like they just toss them in with no training. Not teaching them how to fight, not teaching them non-lethal take downs, or even the best way to handle each species they'll likely encounter while on the beat. Just hands them a bit a cloth and wishes them the best of luck. One would think something like this (even if not to the same extreme) would have happened before.
The job they are given in the guard is to stand here or there and be a visable presenace, showing that the guard includes more than just humans. ALso, using the Baxxid to intimidate crooks into following the laws. Kalgur, from my read of the siduation, and rereading that part of the comic, was atempting to slow, or knock the perp over, not kill them.
If they’re not unfurling their red fleshy-membranes out of their heads, they’re ominously strolling around with soulless eyes. Seriously, the baxxid are all sorts of weird. Weirder than yinglets.
