TUNIC Narrative Guide - Act 4, Part 2: There All Along
Summary: Join the Ruin Seeker (that's our protagonist fox!) on his journey through a strange and vaguely familiar land. His inner thoughts are laid bare as we explore the unknown. Each step brings new mysteries to solve, new challenges to face. - This story is intended as a companion piece to the video game TUNIC, but can also function as a guide if you are stuck or a teaser to get you interested.
If you've reached this point and you haven't faced off against your final foe, turn around and leave now. There are spoilers within these pages that will negatively influence your experience with the game.
After taking some time to search my memories, I've remembered the location of one of the two doors. It was in the West Garden, nearby where I faced the Garden Knight. Traversing the scattered flooded remains, I zip past the Hero's Grave and come to the door in question. I look at the polished surface and with a mental refocus, I visualize the spell.
The door slides open and immediately within is a single chest, lacking even a proper chamber. I hold hope that it's the Holy Cross, but that hope is crushed when I find a sword. A sword exactly like the one I already have. I leave it there, and with a groan of frustration I move on.
The other door, where was it? It looks forested, but with a lot of grass. There's a hedge barrier. Was this from early on? I also feel like I saw it recently. Ah, right, it's on the way to the cemetery! I cross through town and reach the door in little time at all.
This one opens into a chamber, at least. Inside, three chests. Mana fruits, shinybits, and in the middle, the final card. On it is a broken sword engulfed in flame.
Somehow I don't think this is the Holy Cross I'm after. There has to be something that I'm missing. Feeling stumped, I open the booklet and flip through it. Previously, it has done a lot to guide me in my journey, so there has to be something I'm missing.
As I flip through, I stop on the Hints and Clues pages. Immediately, I recognize another one of these special doors! And within the text describing it, it speaks of the Holy Cross. There! That's my next destination, with certainty. Now, where do these notes say it is?
This doodle here is a house. Inside it is a bed - is there something special about the bed? There's a path into another room with a plus in the middle. What is this? There's a dotted line that has something to do with a trophy. The door is at the back of the second room.
My memory is fuzzier than I am, but I think that this is that house from way back at the start of my journey, and the second room is where I found the shield. In fact, the more I envision the chamber, the more certain of it I am. There's a fourth door inside!
Quick as I can zip, I race to the old house, pop through the secret passage, cross the gap, and sure enough, a door! Standing before it, I visualize the spell I've been taught and wait.
The door ... does not budge.
I check the booklet again and confirm the directions. Down. Right. Up. Left. Up. Right.
The door ... still does not budge.
I check the booklet yet again and slow myself down. This world has become so familiar to me, that overconfidence has seeped into my very bones. One would think, after the trauma I faced with my imprisonment, that I would return to questioning the very nature of everything I see, but it seems that I haven't fully learned that lesson.
The door ... is different.
The patterns on the previous doors were all identical, but this one doesn't match the depiction. I think I've been looking at this the wrong way. What actually are these arrows? Why are they special? Looking closer at the doodle at the bottom of page 44, I start to connect the dots. Down. Right. Up. Left. Up. Right. The same arrows are drawn on the large door. The arrows... have been tracing the pattern!
Since this door has a different pattern, of course the spell required is different. I put down the booklet and stare at the door. From the large diamond... Up. Left. Down. Right. Down. Left.
The door ... slides open!
Discovery: The D-Pad inputs for opening doors actually match the pattern found on the doors themselves.
I paw my way slowly through the darkness. The inside of the chamber seems to swallow all light. A page sparkles in the distance, which I trepidatiously step towards and claim.
Whoever wrote these notes seems to have made a breakthrough. More arrows, a different sequence. They seem to be tracing the depiction in the box. Below that, art of a potion bottle, alongside something that resembles the above doodle. To the right, more illegible text. Past that, another box.
On the back, the windmill, with more arrows. In the corner, a doodle of the dagger, the rod, and the orb. The art shows a place I don't quite recognize along with a hook point.
While these notes appear to be full of grand mysteries, I was hoping for something more direct. This was my last lead, and this certainly isn't the Holy Cross. But it's not for nothing. I did learn that there are different patterns. Actually, there was one other lead. Page 44 also shows a golden monument with a pattern almost the same as that of the doors. Maybe the same trick will work there?
Now, where was it again... I check my Overworld map and quickly spot it at the top. To reach it, I'll need to scale the cliff. Exiting the chamber and returning outside, I circle around past the temple. Along the way, I spot an unclaimed chest atop a pillar. Within are more potion fragments.
Returning to my trek, I climb the ladder and walk past the pathway up the mountain towards where I originally found the Fire Rod. A large monument of gold, carved with the same patterning as the doors, yet slightly different. I visualize the path of the decoration on the right side.
In front of the monument, a new page materializes. Was this it? The Golden Path?
The first part here is labeled Secret Gathering Place, and it looks like the room I made a note of earlier. The next part mentions a "final" treasure alongside a pattern that strikes a certain familiarity to the ones I've been interacting with.
The other half of the page shows a list - some illegible, some not. Of note, one entry is said secret gathering place. I think I will go there next.
On the back is perhaps another checklist. It holds a grid of numbers with little context aside from being paired with The Door In The Mountains.
For now, I think it's probably a better idea to explore the fairy clues. The complete passage mentions the Holy Cross, a seeking spell, and that fancy room. Winding my way back down the cliff, I return to the cave behind the waterfall and go inside. Now, what to do...
Adjoined on the page are a pair of decorations. On the left side, a collection of stars. On the right, a pattern not unlike the ones found on the doors.
Well, it's worth a try. Up, left, up, right, down, right. As I trace the path, a group of small golden fairies materialize around me and congregate at the far side of the room. I walk over and try to look around, but I find nothing. I try it again, and they again fly to the same spot. This "seeking spell" has them attracted to this particular location, but within itself it does not seem to yield anything of value. There must be something more to this.
Discovery: Patterns of stars can translate into inputs.
Looking around the room with a more open mind, my eyes are drawn to the decoration etched into the wall. In its center, it seems to include the same elements as the doors or this seeking spell thing. However, I can't quite make it out in its entirety. The design appears to be identical between the two locations, as well as mirrored along the center. With this knowledge, I should be able to transcribe a complete picture with a bit of effort.
Grabbing some chalk, I begin to doodle it out on the ground, starting with the central point. It takes some time, and a bit of a different perspective at times, but eventually it's complete. I then trace it from the center and watch if anything happens.
Discovery: The Seeking-Spell conjures golden fairies that track the location of the nearest rainbow fairy. ↑ ← ↑ → ↓ →
A golden chest materializes at the spot that the golden fairies we leading me to. Locked inside is an extremely vocal rainbow fairy. It floats around the room and chirps endlessly. After over two minutes, it finally quiets down, but it continues to float and drift aimlessly. I check the altar again and words appear on the surface - Souls returned: 1. My booklet has also changed, with an X placed by the entry labeled secret gathering place. At last, a proper lead!
New Goal: Seek out and rescue as many fairies as possible.
I exit the cave and begin to call again on the seeking spell when I stop dead in my tracks. Wait. A. Second. How, exactly, have I been doing this? What, exactly, have I been doing? Is... is this power...
Is this power the Holy Cross?
From deep within I feel an answer touch my soul. Yes, it is. Moreover, I've had this power the entire time. I... I had no idea. How could I have? I could remember nothing when I first awoke. Just like the first time I prayed, a sense of awe radiates through me.
All along, these glyphs and symbols teased me with their presence, yet from my first step, I may have had the ability to draw upon their essence. The thought leaves me truly humbled. Where else are these secrets hidden? What else could have additional meanings? I wish I was a clever enough fox to make sense of the language contained in this booklet. I would love to learn even more about the history of this world.
The adrenaline rush from my epiphany begins to subside, and with a fresh cast of the seeking spell, I gleefully chase after the golden fairies and towards the next hidden secret.
Current Goals
✔Obtain(?) the Holy Cross.
✔Open the other two doors depicted on page 43.
★ Seek out and rescue as many fairies as possible.
★ Seek The Golden Path.
★ Share my Wisdom.
Author's Notes: At what point of your playthrough did you figure out the magic of the Holy Cross? At what point did it become a realization that it was something you had all along? It's one of the most magical moments of the game, to realize something teased in legends from the beginning was laying within your paws the entire time.
Once again, this path is being heavily curated to the sake of the narrative. Certain things are being overlooked in favor of the more obvious, and the timing is optimized for the least backtracking.
I will explain the chest with a sword for those who are curious and don't know why a random sword is held there. It's actually possible to reach that point without having visited the Eastern Belltower by using some of the tricks allowed by the Holy Cross. There's another mini-challenge within the game's achievements that tasks you with obtaining something else early, as well. Something to be curious about!
