No interruptions!
No matter how much Matt might want to, or how easy it’d be to sneak in while Mike’s occupied, the loafster would appreciate not being interrupted during a very important, fulfilling character arc moment in his book. And you know what? Understandable. His bookworm status [as a quilava] - which sometimes [worked against him] - is a trait he’s gladly taken well into his next form, and that spark of imagination burns as bright as ever from the look of those huge ears perking up. What’s he getting all giddy over, though?
Mike still got books for holidays, but the moment he got his own income, he needed to wait for neither special occasions nor Matt’s generosity. In his spare time, he found best-sellers in Lilycove, but later moved onto series he never got to appreciate. Halfway through one such book, Mike found a cathartic character shift rewarding, as he’d predicted it halfway through the previous book in the series. He grinned behind his lips, kicking his feet off the bed and swinging them merrily while dull claws idly but excitedly tapped the page. In walked Matt at that very moment, smirking at the sight of his typhlosion partner’s whimsical kicks and asking what Mike was reading. “Your diary,” Mike said without dropping his smile, not missing a beat.
Was it immediately clarified as a joke so the human didn't have a heart attack? Yes. Did Mike laugh a lot and have to take a break from reading? Yes. Turns out, he’s a troublemaker even at his most innocent, and he probably deserves a noogie. Not shown: The moment a few seconds later where Mike realizes Matt’s reaction implies that he has a diary. Also unseen: The dastardly grin as Mike considers what might get written in something like that. But Matt doesn’t have a diary.
… He has a journal.
