"...Thank you for the gorgeous gown!"
So, if it's not already obvious, it's hooked me, too.
WHY?
BECAUSE, I SHALL EXPLAIN!
So it's obvious that My Little Pony has ALWAYS been aimed at little girls, right? Well Friendship Is Magic has done something I've longed for... A gender-neutral story with female characters. Seriously. If you change the ponies to dogs and change their names to less flamboyant things, it would be considered a gender-neutral show quite easily. Why? Because it's actually a GOOD story, and the characters just HAPPEN to be female, it has almost NOTHING to do with the fact that they're girls!
It actually has CONFLICT that is made and resolved. The characters have shining strengths and great flaws.
... however, here's something you probably didn't see comming... my favorite character?
Rarity. That's right, the prissy, OCD, neat-freak, vain, prideful Rarity. Why?
Because she is simply an amazing character. Her flaws aside, she is actually a very considerate and loving friend, though sometimes she's not good at showing it. She is also very truthful most of the time. She KNOWS she's vain, but she also knows that she really is gorgeous which is normally a set of character traits that most writers wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole unless that character is designed to be generally BAD. Rarity is a GOOD and COMPASSIONATE character who also happens to take very good care of herself, be very ladylike, quite intelligent, and also vain and a pinch prideful. If she's got it, she wants to flaunt it, in a respectable way, though. She loves being showy, and she loves being admired, however she doesn't really get too agressive or too catty when she's NOT the center of attention.
Aside from that, she's not just a vain little dress designer and a drama queen, but she's also just artistic in general. She has flaws that we can all associate with, such as she likes to think she can handle more than she really can, often ending in her overburdening herself and stressing out, a quality that hits VERY close to home here.
Also, something even BETTER, a lot of vain, pretty, or lady-like characters tend to be the Damsels in Distress. GRAH HOW I TEND TO HATE THIS. However, what Rarity may lack in strength and fight, she makes up for in wit, and while she may not be impressive, she can certainly hold her own through wittiness and manipulation.
Vain, Dramatic, Prideful, Beautiful and she knows it, but a great friend with a strong heart who can be both intelligent and manipulative when called upon, and just an overall relatable girl. Why wouldn't I choose her?
... oh, yeah, because I pride myself in being everything non-girly I possibly can, so it seems the logical choice should have been Rainbow Dash or Apple Jack, right? While I love them both, and I do relate, I am moved by Rarity on a more artistic scale, and I love her character. <:3
So there you have it. Wayra's full confession.
... this is strange to admit, since once again, I am generally everything non-girly, but I would totally play dress up with Rarity. I may have a fan-crush on her personality design. XD
