I'm assuming it has to do with the loss of a pet, but this was my immediate thought:
It reminds me of someone who's a bit too ashamed to be a furry. I know when I was younger, I loved wearing a collar, and honestly I think I still do. But I stopped because I felt bad being labeled as cringe and people would immediately assume so many things about me without even knowing me. And honestly, since then, I just feel like I haven't had as much fun in the fandom. And I see that in this picture. Like the ghostly apparition behind them is their fursona or "true personality" just waiting for when the person feels comfortable being them again.
