I don't know if anyone's noticed, but everything i do with the exception of my polished graphite works is like, totally stylized. I've thrown realism out the window, and that feels damn good. Good ridance, y'hear?!?
I used to say realism was a prison - and well... it is. it took me years to learn the skills needed to escape.
I'm starting to have qualms with this scanner too... i need to figure out how to scan and pick up the fine graphite details (the thing my old one was not capable of) but NOT pick up the paper itself. Maybe i'm asking too much... but it seems like other people manage.
Anyway, i babble. This is an oryx... i don't think there's anyone who doesn't love an oryx. Anyone?
Also, i don't think she ever hears "Sorry, there's no more room in the tent!" when night time on the savannah rolls around.

Very pretty. I love her playful backwards glance!
When it comes to scanning, look to see if your scanner gives you options on how to shift the intensity of shadows. Mine has options for highlights, midtones and shadows. I bring the midtones down a lot, and shadows down a bit, to try and get more of the detail in. Often, that way, I even get far more than I really wanted... but you seem like you have very neat lines, so that shouldn't be too much of an issue for you.
Good luck! So faved!

Yeah, i just have to mess around with the settings i think. My problem is most likely that i'm so happy to finally have the fine shading in my scans that i'm afraid to brighten it and lose any... but maybe there's a perfect balance that includes white as white. er... if that makes sense.
Glad you like her!

Does she have upper teeth? That's quite a wicked glance she's tossing back. Your anatomy is a marvel.
Is realism a prison? I think to an extent it is. It locks too many things in. I much prefer the way reality is handled in cinema...or not handled. Nothing is ever lit the way it would really be naturally. Can't have shadows. Tweak the saturation and color to induce a mood. The shots chosen all have their own language and connotation. You only notice cinematography when its bad. I think the same goes for any artistic style. You truly notice a style when it doesn't suit the subject--when it doesn't work.
Your oryx works. Your style well fits what you draw to the extent that it doesn't overpower the subject and substance yet is rigid enough that I spot your drawings whenever I see them. Keep doing what you're doing. Most of us dig it.

She has upper teeth, yeah. you can see the upper and the lower exposed, but the line between is pretty fine.
I admit though, i haven't looked at any skull references, i don't know how many teeth oryx have, or the arrangement of them. She basically has horse teeth...
I always say, if i wanted realism, i'd take a photo...
Of course that's not possible with my subjects, but the point is that art is about expression - and as in comics, exagerating what would be a 'realistic' expression gives it more. More feeling? I don't know, but it makes it expressive. I have yet to master anything, but i've still got a few decades to do so hopefully. ;p

Definitely hard to take photos. If oryx are anything like deer, sheep, goats, and bovines then they don't have front upper teeth...just a plate. However, its one of those little details that could certainly change when you blend human and animal.
So far, your blending has been quite magnificent.

Aaaw she pretty ^_^
As for your scanner, have you tried turning down the brightness and contrast in your scanner settings? Mine was scanning too harsh also, then I scanned with those settings and it was easier to restore its original flare in photoshop. I er.. hope you use photoshop? I'm sure there's a way to do it in other editing programs too.. Alas, I ramble! /flee

Always nice to see more gemsbok.
I haven't been doing a lot of art lately but yeah, realism can be a kind of a trap. I went really hard into it back when I was drawing regularly, doing exercise pieces to try to get down light reflection off different textures, the works. The problem is that there are so many things you CAN'T do with realism...Exaggerated expressions particularly. And it's possible to do a comic in a realistic style, but you're going to be months to a 'toonier' style's hours.
What I'm fiddling with now is a 'realistic' style and a 'toonier' style.

*nods* Realism seems to me to basically be defining boundaries for yourself. ...and for some porpoises that might be beneficial, but it seems that for most art, you would want freedom, not restrictions.
I can do realism moderately well, at least with a pencil... and that's fine, but i like having the option not to. :) Sounds like you understand that exactly.

absolutely wonderful. the plural or oryx . . . is oryx . . . just like moose . . . lol
this is one of those few times where i wish yer work was in color . . . cause a B/W image is hard on the eyes when its set as a desktop image *cries* anywho . . . . instafav n.n

Realism is a complicated issue, in some cases anthros which are quite stylized can feel more realistic than others which try to be totally photo-realistic. My own style is not quite realistic altough several people consider it so. I think the believability of the anatomy is often more important than the line or the overall style, IMHO that's why your ungulates are among the best ones. ^_^
