Zel and the Science Kids in Batty Battered Babysitter
Zel gets pressed into babysitting Dr Science's kids for an evening. Hilarity ensues.
---
When I decided to have Zel work at the labs, one of the ideas I came up with was to have him forced into serving as babysitter for Dr Science’s kids. And for hilarity to ensue.
The story title comes for the trope name for those cartoons where a baby crawls up a construction site or whatever and their babysitter suffers ridiculous harm trying to protect them.
I wrote this because Zel had been without a post in a while and the pictures I have of him I'm saving for later. Plus, him and Nisha makes this a bat theme week.
I also wanted to put some detail out there about the Science kids.
Prime-A Science was the parthenogenesis baby from the first Science preg pic. A concoction Dr Science tested on herself caused her to become rapidly pregnant. Prima was born with accelerated aging but Dr Science fixed it before she aged too much. She’s big for her age as a result, being 3 but looking older.
Her name Prime-A comes from her being genetically a clone of her mom. Prime being used to distinguish a derivative. As you might guess, Dr Science isn’t great at baby names.
She’s an interesting case of nature vs nurture because Dr Science was an outgoing nerd when she was young and Prima is shy and introverted. She’s more interested in fantasy than science and wants to be a writer when she grows up.
Chimera Probe Science is the result of Dr Science’s encounter with the alien tentacles that came out of a portal. Chimera because she’s a mix of squirrel and alien genetics. Probe because Dr Science believes her alien parent meant her to gather information on Earth. Again, not great at baby names.
Chimera is endlessly curious. Despite being under a year old, she can talk in full, complex sentences. She reads and understands information at an advanced level. She skitters around in vents like an Alien from Alien.
She’s still a baby, though. She can be bribed with treats. And she sleeps most of the day away because she's a baby.
Dr Science doesn’t stay in frequent contact with most of her family. Mostly because she’s a workaholic and because they’re not really very sciency people so she doesn't have much to talk to them about.
Prudence is an exception because she barged her way into Dr Science’s life when she heard she had a sweet cottage with some spare bedrooms. And then she wheedled her aunt into getting her a scholarship at Grimaldi, using her connections to the school.
She's not just a freeloader. If she wasn't there, the dishes would never get done and the place would only have functional decor. And she was conveniently around when Dr Science came home pregnant when she had not been when she left that morning.
And that’s Dr Science’s living situation, her close family, and how she supports her workaholicism.
