A few members of a discord server and I conspired to make the ugliest, least cohesive collection of pixel art prg button elements possible.
We failed, and this is our legacy.
Each element and its possible significance:
- a battery and phone reception meter. One bar of battery is used whenever the player "Call For Help!"s, swapping out party members. The "On my way!" shows up if the character you're swapping out is far away
oh also. we had the goal of using as many ugly placeholder images as possible. I'm very happy with the Guy Fieri x Neelix Casting Thundara placeholder.
- Blood meter. Because you know what goes well with pixel art? Disturbingly textured syringes.
- ORB
- A party display sent directly from hell to kill me specifically
- - character name and level. Level of what? That's a secret :P
- - HP. Stands for Have a Party, since that's what happens when you hit 0!
- - MP. No numbers here. We are in Botania land.
- - GUN. I don't know man. Give your rpg characters a gun. It''ll be funnyyyy...
- - Don't worry about this last meter! Just Trust me.
- then there's an undertale style combat box. Thought it would be awful if players could place their own obstacles so I drew that being a thing.
- The selection buttons for different ui elements is shown below. I tried to match the style and color of each while keeping them all the same size.
- Then we have my favorite mechanic: the damage indicators! Who needs numbers when you can have big ol cards that show up alongside the screen whenever something happens! They stack up on top of each other like you just won solitaire. except instead of winning solitaire you're losing. health.
- this would be a horrible way to avoid having to draw and animate tiny sprite animations for all the spells. So I considered it.
- I promptly went off on a tangent of Designing. The text at the bottom of each card has little sparklies alongside it that indicate the "elemental type", which can be physical, psychic, paranormal, or gun. I like the sparklies.
- I am considering some of this for one project or other...

I hate-like the colour palette(s), too. Parts have a green-screen colour theme... but then there are the smooth pastel images, and the pixel-art syringe, and your own limited-palette style display of party stats. It's not merely lacking a coherent colour theme, but is a collision of several that would be fine on their own but are a horrible mess when together. They look worse the more I think about it.
- - GUN. I don't know man. Give your rpg characters a gun. It''ll be funnyyyy...
Well, as long as it's a PG-13 gun, lest the ESRB complain.

Well I wasn't until you pointed it out to me.
"Trauma Points" perhaps?
Who needs numbers when you can have big ol cards that show up alongside the screen whenever something happens!
That's kind of a good idea; I recall there are already some games that do that well.
