Synopsis: Aric is a hardworking lion who works in construction. His job means his feet ache a lot and one day he finds a shop that has something to relieve his aching paws. Just not in the way he expects.
The Lion And The Insta-Spray
In the city, amidst towering skyscrapers and bustling streets, lived Aric. This early 30s lion worked on a construction site and his muscular physique made him a valuable member of the workforce. He toiled tirelessly as a construction worker and day in and day out, Aric spent hours on his feet, lifting heavy materials and running the construction process. Although he wasn't the boss, he may as well have been. He knew how to run the site efficiently but he had no desire to be a leader.
His muscles were strong, his mane rugged and streaked with grey, but his feet bore the brunt of his labour. After long hours of work, they throbbed with pain, making the journey home a challenge in itself. Each step caused him pain and he had to stop regularly on his walk home. He tried several boots, insoles and more but nothing seemed to help. Even though Arics apartment was not far from the construction site, he'd started to get the bus home just to give his poor feet a rest.
One evening, as Aric trudged wearily towards the bus stop, his sore feet protesting with every step. It had been a long week and he was looking forward to a quiet weekend. Just when he thought he couldn't bear it any longer, he spotted a small shop nestled between two buildings. Its sign lit up the street in bold neon letters: "Everyday Relief Emporium."
"Huh," Aric thought to himself, "must be new. I've not seen that before."
From his location across the street, he tried to see what was in the window and he saw a variety of different products, from what looked like food and drinks to toys and even clothing. But what caught his eye were the bottles and cans on the shelves. Brightly coloured and in various shapes and sizes.
Curiosity got the better of him and Aric ignored his aching feet and crossed the road to enter the shop. He was greeted by a warm, soothing atmosphere with a smell of spices in the air. On closer inspection, he saw the shelves lined with various products stretched from floor to ceiling, each with different categories and some even promising relief for different ailments. But it was a particular display that caught Leo's attention.
*Feet Be Free Insta-Spray*
Its label depicted several cartoon characters of different species with wide smiles, whom all appeared to be dancing while their feet were surrounded by sparkles. Intrigued, Aric picked up what looked to be the last small spray bottle and read the description.
*Instant, animated relief for sore feet,* it proclaimed, *Simply spray on those aching feet and they will bounce back to life.*
"Huh," Aric said out loud, "it's worth a shot, I suppose."
He didn't believe it would do anything but he was desperate to try and stop his feet aching after a long day. He walked up to the counter but there was no one around.
"Hello? Anyone here?" Aric said loudly.
From the back of the shop came movement and slowly an old lizard dressed in a matching tracksuit appeared.
"Hello, young Sir. I'll be with you shortly"
The lizard drudged through the shop, dragging his tail behind him.
'Geez, this guy must be well over 100,' Aric thought to himself.
"112 years exactly, young man, " the lizard laughed.
"Oh, uh I wasn't...I mean...how did you know?"
The lizard reached the counter and looked up at Aric with cloudy eyes.
"I'm old enough now to understand what goes through someone's head. How can I help you?"
"Oh, uh I'm just interested in this spray."
"Oh yes," the lizard said, taking the bottle, "a new product. My recipe. Very popular, you know."
Aric smiled a little at the idea of this elderly lizard leaning over a large cauldron, casting spells and brewing potions.
"I assume it's safe? You know, approved by the health board and everything?"
The lizard let out a wheezy laugh.
"Of course it's safe. I wouldn't be running this shop if my products weren't safe."
"Heh, I guess so." Aric laughed nervously.
"You look tired," the lizard said.
"What makes you say that?"
"The way you stand, your body is tense. You seem to be a hard worker. Perhaps you work too hard."
"Yeah," Aric shrugged, "I guess I do put in more work than some of my colleagues."
"Well a man's strength comes from his feet so this spray should do wonders for you." the lizard smiled.
"I've tried everything else, so what's the harm?" Aric smiled back.
"I'll just get a bag for that," the lizard said.
With difficulty, the elderly reptile moved away from the counter, grabbed a plastic bag and placed the spray bottle inside.
"I'm glad you decided to visit my little shop," the lizard said.
Aric exchanged his money with the shopkeeper, and smiled once more at the lizard, clutching the bag in his muscular hand. As he turned to leave, he felt a small hand grip his arm.
"Oh, a word of warning young Sir. That spray is quite potent. Its effects may not unfold as you expect. It varies from man to man. Use it carefully."
"Oh..okay. Thank you."
"Goodbye, Sir and enjoy."
With a feeling of excitement in his stomach, Aric continued his journey home. The thought of relief for his aching feet filled his mind. He was close to quitting his job and finding something that involved sitting down, that way his feet wouldn't ache anymore, but he loved his job. He'd been in construction since he left school. It's all he knew. He hated to admit it, but he was planning everything on this mysterious new spray in his possession.
Aric soon arrived home after a short bus journey. His apartment had become his sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the city streets and with a sigh of relief, he closed the door behind him, kicked off his work boots, slumped on the couch and lifted his tired socked feet onto the coffee table. Even with his feet up, they still called out in pain. Aric leaned forward and pulled his socks off revealing his thick toes and wide soles.
"Right then guys, let's see if this stuff works," he said out loud to his feet.
When he uncapped the bottle of spray he had purchased, a sweet, floral scent wafted from the opening, filling the air with a smell that was both unusual and pleasant. Aric read the instructions on the bottle and checked the small print.
"OK, so 'Spray vigorously over your entire feet'. Hmm, I'm not sure where else I would spray it." Aric smiled before reading the rest of the instructions, "What else is there? 'Relief takes effect almost immediately. Warning, the effects of this spray vary from person to person. Use at own risk.' Well, that seems ominous."
Aric looked at his feet and a twinge of uncertainty came across him. He wasn't sure he liked the sound of the warning. After a day's hard labour, Aric decided that a quick shower would be the best thing to do before he tried the spray.
"Maybe it would be better to try this in the morning," he thought to himself, "I should have a shower and a good night's sleep first. Yeah, that's what I'll do."
Feeling better about his decision, he put the bottle on the kitchen worktop and headed to the bathroom.
Aric was fast in the shower. Being a feline, he hated being wet and once he was showered and dried, he put on a plain white vest and jogging bottoms and made his way back into the kitchen, where he looked at the spray bottle again. His feet still called out in pain and he limped around his kitchen looking for food. His eyes kept glancing back at the spray and his curiosity soon got the better of him.
"Well, I guess if I do it now then I won't be in pain when I go to bed."
He grabbed the spray, walked back to his couch and placed his feet on the coffee table.
"Alright guys, here goes," he said to his feet.
He pointed the nozzle directly at his feet and pressed the trigger, releasing a fine mist that enveloped his sore paws. The effect was instant. A warm sensation spread across his toes, quickly wrapping around his soles and reaching as far up as his ankles.
The feeling sent shivers of delight up his spine, washing away the fatigue and leaving behind a soothing warmth that seeped into the very bones of his feet.
Aric closed his eyes, savouring the sensation as the spray worked its magic, banishing the ache from his weary feet. He flexed his toes experimentally, marvelling at how effortlessly they moved, free from the stiffness that had been affecting them moments before.
The soothing effect spread further, enveloping his entire body. Aric closed his eyes and relaxed into the cushions of his couch.
"Oh, wow, that feels good. I'm getting more of that spray."
But then, as he opened his eyes to admire his revitalized feet, he noticed something peculiar. They were twitching, not from pain or discomfort, but of their own accord. Tiny spasms rippled through his muscles, causing his toes to curl and flex in rhythmic patterns.
"Huh, that's strange. That spray must have some kind of muscle stimulant in it." Aric mumbled to himself as he watched the spectacle in front of him.
Aric leaned forward and rubbed his feet, hoping that would stop their twitching but it didn't work. He watched in confusion as his feet continued their involuntary movements. He flexed his toes and stretched them as far as he could but still, they twitched and pulsed.
"Oh, for God's sake. Why won't you stop!"
Aric stood up and paced across the floor of his apartment, hoping to make them stop. It wasn't an unpleasant feeling but if his feet kept spasming, he'd never get any sleep. Aric figured he could try and wash the spray off so he turned to the bathroom. As he did though, another sensation came across his feet. They began to feel warmer. Too warm. And even more tingly than before.
"That's weird," he thought as he looked down at his feet.
The spasms rippled through the muscles of his feet and sent jolts of pleasure through his body. Aric let out a small moan and his toes curled as a wave of euphoria swept over him. He sat back down on the couch and wiggled his toes, letting the sensations wash over him. It was unlike anything he had felt before.
"This is insane..." he moaned.
As Aric moaned, his feet started to flex their toes again but this time, Aric wasn't the one moving them. He stared frozen in disbelief as his feet began to move of their own accord.
"What the hell?" he yelped as his feet flexed their toes and rolled their ankles all by themselves.
Panic surged through him as he tried desperately to regain control, but it was futile. His feet had a mind of their own.
"No, this isn't right..." Aric said as he placed his feet back down on the floor. He rubbed them vigorously against the carpet and could feel the fibre, but still, his feet moved by themselves.
"What's going on?"
Suddenly his feet pulled out and held themselves in the air. Aric gasped and tried to pull them back but they resisted. His toes flexed and curled and his feet began to rub against each other. The warming sensation from the spray had gone and the aching had vanished as well. Instead, Aric was left with an uneasy feeling as his feet moved freely.
"Jesus, what the hell is this?! "
His feet slowly lowered themselves back down and instinctively, Aric stood up. As soon as he was upright his feet pulled him forward in uneasy, unwanted steps. With each step, Aric was propelled across the room, his feet and legs moving in graceful arcs and twirls that he could not command.
He was dancing.
His heart raced with fear as he realized he was powerless to stop the movements his feet had endowed upon him.
"Stop...stop it! I can't..." Aric cried out as his feet carried him around the room.
They danced, spun, pirouetted and stepped all across the room, pulling Aric's body with them.
"What's going on?!"
Around and around he spun as his feet pulled him around the furniture. His feet were almost in a frenzy as they pulled Aric in unwanted motions through his apartment.
Terror gripped Aric's chest as he struggled to comprehend what was happening.
How could that spray bring his feet to life?
How long will this last?
Aric's mind reeled with questions and he was unable to focus.
"Help! Someone help me!" he screamed.
His feet slowly stopped their dancing and allowed Aric to catch his breath. He used that moment to pull at his legs, but his feet kept in place.
"Guys... what's happening?" he asked his feet.
He stared at the appendages holding him prisoner, willing them to obey him, but his feet twitched a little and started to walk him to his apartment door.
Aric gasped.
"No...no it can't be!"
Aric's eyes widened and he carried on looking down at his feet with fear. Tears formed at the corners of his eyes as he pleaded for release from the strange power that had taken over his feet.
"Please stop this!" Aric cried, but it simply echoed through the empty apartment.
Aric's feet pulled him closer to the door and his panic was at boiling point.
"No please, I don't want this! Don't do this!" he whimpered.
With a loud bang, his feet kicked the door which swung open, revealing the hallway beyond. Aric gripped the door frame hoping to prevent his feet from dragging him out into the world and away from the safety of his apartment.
"I won't let you do this!" he shouted.
With all the strength he could muster, Aric pulled his legs back. His feet were determined though and they pulled harder, forcing his body towards the hallway. Arics hand slipped and he was taken away by his feet.
"No no no!"
Panic kept surging through him as he realized he was betrayed by his body and his feet led him forward and down the stairs. Aric tried to grab items as he walked by but his feet kept him just out of arm's reach. Soon he was outside and wandering down the road of the city.
To passersby, it looked like Aric had been on a night out and had too much to drink. They'd even think he'd lost his shoes somewhere. His steps were shaky as his feet led him where they wanted to go. Strangers cast curious glances in his direction as he stumbled along, his movements jerky and erratic as his feet dictated his path.
"Please stop...t...take me home..." he whispered to his feet.
They didn't answer him and just carried him through the city streets.
Aric was mortified. Not only was his body not his own, it was kidnapping him. He looked ahead and saw the park was quickly approaching. His heart pounded as he realized where his feet were leading him, but there was nothing he could do to stop it. With each step, his dread deepened, knowing that he was about to become a spectacle for all to see.
"Please, stop this! Oh God!"
As he entered the park, Arics worst fears were realized. His feet danced gleefully through the grass, kicking up droplets of dew as they splashed through grass and mud. Laughter echoed around him as onlookers watched in amusement, unaware of the torment Leo was enduring. They simply assumed he was a busker or a drunk.
His heart was pounding out of his chest as he wished his feet to stop, but they kept dancing relentlessly. It seemed to Aric that they revelled in the freedom of movement, dancing with increased energy and displaying more elaborate moves that placed a strain on Arics limbs. He closed his eyes and covered his ears to protect his mind from the waves of laughter that came from the gathering crowd.
Tears kept welling up in Arics eyes as he stumbled along, his feet dragging him deeper into the park with each passing moment. He hoped to break free from the mysterious thing that held him captive, to reclaim control of his own body, but he was helpless until the effects wore off. If they wore off.
Aric's mind was in turmoil. He'd never felt so powerless, so helpless. His entire body was under the control of his own feet He could do nothing but watch as they led him further and further away from his apartment.
As the darkness of the night fell, his feet pulled him through the park and down the back streets of the city. All Aric could do was try and stop himself as his feet led him where they wanted to go. He tried at every opportunity to grab onto something to steady his motions, but it was pointless. His feet kept him just out of reach of everything that could have helped.
The night dragged on and Aric's feet danced him all around the city. His heart pounded and his lungs ached as his feet gave him no break and as dawn slowly approached, he recognised where he was and a glimmer of hope rose within him.
"Thank God...my apartment building..." he panted.
The sun had not yet risen and the sky was still dark. The streetlights cast long shadows across the empty street as his feet slowly teased him towards home.
"Please...take me home..."
Aric's feet continued to dance him across the pavement and through the doors of his building. Slowly they walked him back up the stairs and eventually came to the door of his apartment. It was in that moment a wave came across his feet and as quickly as it had happened, the feeling of warmth faded and his feet became his own again. Aric dropped to the floor with a thud.
"Ow..." he winced, rubbing his legs.
He looked up and saw that his apartment door was open and slowly lifted himself back up and hobbled back in. Even after a night of dancing, his feet felt fine. Better than fine. His feet felt amazing, no pain, no aches. Nothing. The spray had done its job and relieved his aching feet. It was the rest of him that was now in pain. He'd been dragged all around the city, forced to dance like a madman, and he was exhausted.
"Oh, God...." he moaned, before closing the door and locking it.
He then hobbled over to his couch and collapsed on it. He looked down at his feet and smiled a little.
"I guess... That spray did what it said...my feet don't hurt anymore..."
He saw the spray bottle on the coffee table and picked it up.
"But I'll be dammed if I'll go through that again."
He turned on his couch and aimed the spray bottle at his bin. As he threw it, the bottle caught the edge and bounced off and hit the corner of his worktop, where it cracked and the liquid spilt over his favourite pair of white Converse shoes that he'd left there intending to put them away.
"Damn it.."
He walked over to them and began to bend down and pick them up when suddenly his shoes twitched.
"What the..."
As Aric watched, the Converses twitched more and the laces began to rise into the air. Aric stepped back in shock and it dawned on him what had happened.
The spray brought his feet to life.
Had it done the same to his shoes?
