I'm thinking, what if Odri's species was the last vestige of the human lineage in the far future, and Odri and Jeni - feeling a lack of meaning - start doing the Quantum Leap thing and going back in time to help other people's lives. So when one of them is in a "present-day" human body, they look to the other like a human version of themselves.

The difference with actual Quantum Leap is that these two know what they're getting into and they do it anyway.
