First off, holy shit.
dragoneer, of all people, bought one of my auctions on FurBid. Can I say how honored I feel? :) He's a great artist in his own right. Second off, holy shit. I've always loved his character, "Preyfar," and was so excited to do a piece involving this character! So here is Preyfar running along side a spotted hyena in the serengeti. This piece ended up being so big that my comp ran slow while I was coloring it. 20-something hours of coloring, 20-something hours of African music, and 41 layers later, and we have a new Preyfar piece! :)

*blushes at the hug* Aww thank you, though I'm not really sure I deserve a hug, since I was merely stating a fact. The sheer amount of detail you put into this is amazing from fur textureing and patter, to Prefar's mesh shirt to the absolutely gorgeous background featuring both the full moon and the hints of the begining dawn. Even more amazing is how you managed to make Preyfar fit into the setting, raver-style clothing and all. That thake a lot of talent and a keen eye.
Heeeeee! ^-^ Yes, you do deserve a hug. Most people comment by saying, "Neat." and I'm like, "WHAT is neat?" but your comment was descriptive... and so was your last one! You let me know what you liked so I can remember to emulate it again in the future. :) It was a really fun piece to do. I absolutely love doing painting of Africa. You can be so colorful and creative or bland and drab. Even the bland and drab is beautiful in its own way. I think the reason Preyfar and the hyena mesh well is because the grass mimics the hyena's coloring while the sky mimics Preyfar's coloring and it ties together. :)
Yeah, that is kinda rough when one-word comments dominate- Of course, I've been guilty of that myself.
I've never been a painter, and my eye for settings is rather lame- a good chunk of my backgrounds are either simple, non-existent, or very, very heavily photoshoped photos. it's my weak spot, so I do admit to envy. :)
Ahhh! I see, I didn't look at the image that way, but now you pointed it out, it does do that. I'm even more impressed. :)

That was the first thing that caught my eye, the way the hyena meshed with the african landscape and Preyfar meshes with the sky, it's harmonic. I've been a sketch artist all my life, and I'm just starting to color things now, and create backgrounds, so I really appreciate these kind of pieces.
Same way I do fur. I mostly color with Corel Painter, but I do grass in Photoshop. I first make an area that I want the grass to be in with a regular solid color brush. I then lock that layer and select a lighter color and a darker color than the original grass layer. I then make alternating stripes on that layer, dark, light, dark, light. I get my Smudge tool and set it to 1 pixel at 100% opacity. I then make large oval-like movements to blend the light and dark colors together. This should make streaks of light and dark and it's really grainy looking. I then set the opacity to 60% and just make fast up and down movements to help smooth out the grass. I then use dodge and burn to shade and highlight my grass. I go over the grass again with up and down movements (60% opacity) and it'll blend the highlighting and shading. Once the picture is complete and saved to JPG... I go over the grass with 90% opacity to make some grass pieces appear longer with simply bottom to top movements. Or... it might be easier to show you in person sometime. XD
