In his younger days, Shin did not have an easy time of life. Being an orphan, he already had it rough. He lived in a well run and cared for orphanage with clean, high end rooms, but his liking of darker colors and such made him a prime target for bullying. His always wearing a mask only made things worse, and he often hid in his room (he was one of many to be lucky to get a room to themselves), to cry, wondering why others didn't like him, when he was nothing but nice. His hardly talking also didn't help matters.

One day though, he came back to his room to find a surprise. It was a creature he'd only heard stories about, one rumored to love hugs and cuddles. So on one of his bad days near the end of his stay at the orphanage, before he was scarred and injured in an explosion, said creature proved the rumors were true. It wasn't afraid of him at all, and only climbed into his lap for a hug, which the sad young shark gave it. The huggable thing had no idea how much this simple act would mean to him, and how much it helped. From that point, it stayed with him, and he gladly took it in. It would stay with him for the rest of his life, he just didn't know it. Yet.
