Original Species: Great Scraper
The Great Scraper is a species of hadrosaur native to the volcanic region of Arcadia. Its name comes from the way it feeds: this dinosaur uses its beak to scrape off moss from rocks. It supplements its diet with fungi and the occasional polyp. Due to its environment and the heightened concentration of sulfur in its food, the Great Scraper had to find a way to expel the harmful element.
Following the tried and true rule of "if it's not broken don't fix it", the Great Scraper underwent convergent evolution with the K'Konderix. Much like its demi-mammalian contemporary, this dinosaur also developed a pair of sacks on the sides of its head. These are used to store sulfuric acid, which it can then use to fend off predators. Even creatures as large and violent as the Black Lava Drake are unwilling to get sprayed with acid.
This species of hadrosaur shows sexual dimorphism. A male Great Scraper has a bright blue crest on its nose, visible on the volcanic region's black and red landscape. They are also around 10% larger than the females. Aside from that, both sexes have a black and brown coloration on their bodies. Their thick hide is dotted with rows of osteoderms that provide extra protection from would-be attackers.
In the nesting season, Great Scrapers migrate away from the volcanic region, most commonly towards the coasts where they can lay their eggs in a less toxic environment. While adults can handle the harsh conditions around volcanoes, the babies are far too fragile for that. The hatchlings spend the first 8 weeks of their lives feeding on coastal vegetation and gaining mass. After that, they are strong enough to handle the tough conditions of the volcanic region.
