So I've really been enjoying getting into Amtgard lately. It was a perfect chance to use Veskatts suit in another situation so hell yeah thought I, more testing! So far Veskatt has held up well with the thing that is struggling the most being the toes to stick on the shoes and the gloves starting to get worn due to all the swinging of boffers at people. The plastic mask itself has taken a lot of smacks and blows and /so far/ is holding up just great! My face under it however >.<
For this curious when in the suit I tend to play one of these little bastards;
https://wiki.amtgard.com/Skirit
Who are kind of crappy Assassins really. But as I've heard a few grumbles behind my back during the last few camp days at the three camps I rotate through; Dragons Forge, Obsidian Grove, and Mystic Seas about Monsters being in the game I will soon be branching out into more standard classes just wearing the suit. So just a rat person who is also a Scout or Warrior. Starting with Healer! To bring Veskatt back to his proper place and role! Though the Skirit I am currently playing in the games is named Rak as they are not Skaven. Myself, Faclan the entity, also plays a Skirit researcher who is currently hanging out in one of the rat dens and occasionally makes RP posts and writes letters for Rak for him to deliver to the camps he visits basically saying 'hey please dont stab Rak he wants to assist this absolutely is not a Skirit scheme its fine'.
But in addition to all the smacking the hell out of each other and trying to capture flags Amtgard also likes to encourage its members to craft and expand on things. So thats what has led to my making now three of these little artifacts. (The other two will be in scraps) One will be given to each of the previously mentioned camps mainly as a gift. And hey so far these and the suit have gotten me two Orders of the Dragon! So woo hoo! But the 'lore' behind these shall be lower I'll first explain how I made this.
Starting with a yogurt container from the Dollar store and the same brown fur I made Veskatts arms and mask cover out of. The container is in two main parts of the cup and then the lid of the cup where you would normally put your berries to hold onto them before dumping them inside the yogurt in the main cup. As the container itself tapers toward the bottom the fur that circles around the top kind of gets folded over itself once you fully wrap it around but thankfully the fur can be folded over itself at the seam at the back to make it look just fine. The container top is then wrapped in fur again but as the top is a full circle the fur didn't fold all the way over the middle. But a separate piece of fur over the hole at the top like a little toupee worked just fine. I had initially thought to try and add in an extra cup on top to be the head but I'm glad I did not as these things were more than big enough and complicated enough for my nooby hands.
With the two parts covered in fur next comes the poison vial that seemed to be a pretty big part of the Skirit identity since they get poison weapon as one of their abilities. So I got some tiny cheap vials from the dollar store and filled them with green cotton balls for that. Something for the Favor to hold onto. Then some pipe cleaners for the arms (I thought these looked too big later on so the next versions of the Favor just have folded fake fur) which were furred and then I cut out small pink felt hands and feet just for the looks. Glueing and securing them to the cup to be 'holding' the vial that is really just glued on.
The head was the hardest part as making the mouth stuck out forward without drooping down was a challenge. Eventually we used a popsicle stick on the upper half of the muzzle to also attach the nose too to keep it straight as the bottom one hanging was more fine. And then little black buttons for the eyes and folded felt ovals for the ears! The container itself still able to be opened and closed (though lining up the 'front' of both halves is a real pain when trying to close it).
But why did I make it besides yay rat? Whats the purpose?
The night guards at the Forge would tense when there was a skittering at the edge of their torchlight. Two small beads about four feet off the ground watching them. One of the guards reaching for the alert bell before the pricks of light spoke up. "No! Nononon. Give." It squeaked out before walking into the light. A Skirit. In a silly yellow hat. That bell grabbed as one always meant more before the Skirit shook their head and repeated; "Nono! Give!" And held out two items toward the guards.
One was easy to see as a sealed envelope. But the other one was...odd. It looked like a rat in the shape of a jar. Holding some kind of vial. Both held out as the Skirit repeated - "Give!" The younger guard nudged forward to reach out to them as the elder held a throwing axe ready. Could never be sure with those vermin. But once both items were taken, with a rattle from the jar at the smallest tilting, the Skirit would nod and skitter backwards into the darkness before turning and running off. "Give good!" The rest of the night shift was a tense one as every noise out there could be more Skirit. But when dawn finally came there had been nothing. And bed was calling.
The items left in the gate house for when those who could properly identify what had just been given were awake. Though it was checked several times during the shift. Just in case something crawled out of it.
It was not magical. Which was generally a good sign. A Druid on hand who was handling the jar as a Wizard took the envelope. The envelope opened to remove the letter as the jar was turned and rotated during its examination. Rattling most times before the letter revealed what's its purpose was.
'Greetings Dragons Forge!
I know of you but have never met before, and find my ability to travel anywhere beyond my current working location troubling. But I hope the items were delivered by Rak and not just taken from his dead body. But from what I've heard of the troubles you have had with the Skirit I will not fully blame you for that course of action. But if you are reading this I like to hope. But you are likely curious as to what the other item given is. Perhaps some of your Scouts have seen items like it before during raids into Skirit incursions but did not pay them any mind. But here I am to try and help. They are called Denmother Favors. They are used by the Denmothers to control the Skirit when they are young. As you have likely found out by handeling the item it rattles easily and fairly loudly when moved. This is to grab the attention of the Skirit around and make them pay attention as a task is about to be given out. The completion of which quickly and properly will lead to a reward often far better than they can scrounge from our cities trash. If you would carefully hold between the Favors ears and turn left it should unscrew.'
This passed onto the Druid who gave the head a spin. It thankfully twisted off easily. And inside the Favor would be what appeared to be pellets of food, a few gold coins, and even a small boot knife.
'I give you one of the extra ones from this Den after a group left to form a new one in hopes you can use it to lower the amount of Skirit incidents you have. It is my hope that should you find one or a few causing potential trouble that a rattle of the Favor will make them stop and turn to listen. Believing you have a task for them and they will be rewarded if they comply. However it would be terrible on my status as a researcher to not inform you of a potential risk. While Skirit /may/ see you as someone with a task they also may see you as someone who killed a Denmother to steal that Favor. And will therefore attack you even angrier than they were before as someone who killed a 'Mama' even if it was not theirs. I hope for the former but believe you should prepare for the latter. Perhaps I will be in contact again and if so I will hopefully send Rak again - if he still lives.
- Good minds and long life from a slightly chewed researcher.'
That was the little RP post I made to introduce it for the competition where we were to make an artifact for the camp. But if It was not clear these are essentially Skirit lootboxes. Denmothers, stressed as they are trying to corral the dozens of screaming skittering pups, give the Favors a shake to make them rattle loudly. This quiets down the kits as they now know that a task is about to be offered. Doing well which means you get a reward from the container. Far better than what you can take from the trash. And the thought of what it is makes the rats eager to do the task well. It even works, sometimes, on the adults which is what the Researcher is hoping the camps use this for. To make less Skirit corpses all over the place.
Rak (me in suit) follows 'this' (all the camps who have them) around as it was his own Mothers Favor. And as long as the camps hold onto it he will happily listen to what these none Skirit have to say. After all hes gotten good rewards so far. As well as the death glares and curses from them - but thats standard stuff really.
Hope that makes sense for all and the second version(s) of these can be found here!;
