These guys have a coat of short, thick fur over their loose, blubbery skin. As a result, they look rather fat, but underneath it all their bodies are very well-muscled.
Their wrists and ankles have bone spurs large enough to protrude from their skin. While these growths are not naturally sharp, the bones are very thick and solid and can be used to crack open shellfish or all manner of other things.
They also possess a curious, intuitive ability to regulate many of their autonomous body functions consciously. They can adjust their heart rate, breathing rate, and even some endocrine functions with a bit of concentration.
While generally uninvolved in the affairs of the more land-bound races before the descent, their ability to function well in hostile environments and seafaring ways have lead their society to a much more prominent point in recent decades. Those who no longer feel inclined to hunt and gather on their own can easily carve out a niche in the world as traders, guides, and even mercenaries.
For the sake of clarity, these guys are from the same setting as the flufftaurs I've been drawing lately. They are similarly unnamed at the moment (this does not mean that I am looking for suggestions =V).
