That's something I've seen quite a bit in manga, but I think I actually drew it the wrong way! I've always liked the look of it though

What I really like about it is, when it's taken to indicate the perspective of the speaker, it's gives a feeling of exactness to the drawing- "oh, I'm looking at the stuff in this panel from this particular angle" - maybe I interpreted it this way because of the anchor-tool's movements in Illustrator, which if you were pulling in a line away from the balloon, would show you the mirrored line extending into the balloon, so that you would know the exact line you were pulling on.
Anyway, this is a fascinating thing, and I think I'm going to incorporate it into one or more of the mini-comics I'm picking over, it really gives a different feeling to "first person" comics perpective when there's a piece of information you can easily see that tells you exactly the line that you (as the character) are looking along.
