100 Day Art Challenge Day 81 - Katwah: River Wolves
Known as the Katwah by the New Cambrian natives, the creatures of the Greatwoods rivers are known by many names. Forest Stars, Hunter Stars, Star Packs, or most usually in literature, River Wolves. As they are radially symmetrical, with six simple eyes and three arms with tubefeet and a rough mottled orange and brown surface, it is easy to draw parallels between the River Wolves and sea-stars, but they are entirely different creatures. For one, unlike any sea star they are vertebrates, with an internal skeleton, and not one, but three vertebral columns. The creatures live along rivers, digging out large dens in the muddy banks, and hunting the woods nearby in small packs of 5-8. Give them wide berth. River Wolves move with a whirling motion, and can be difficult spot, and even if you do, it can be hard to judge which way they will turn next, making avoiding one that is too close difficult. And it is rarely just one. They are known to hunt and kill sentients, and have a venomous bite, which the natives have extracted to make a medicine (or poison, translations are unclear) called Tamuk, or Milk of Sleep. Little to nothing is known of how they reproduce, but it supposed they spawn in the rivers. Rumors persist of large "Matriarch" Katwah, the size of a big cat such as a lion, but these are most likely tall tales made to scare off settlers.
A monster made for a TTRPG I'm working on called Blockade Runner, and the first bit of Blockade Runner art or lore I've posted. In the game, River Wolves are meant to be mid-level enemies, especially in a pack.
