Original Species: Lumen Deer
The Lumen Deer is a species of cervid native to the forested areas of Western Elysium. While not as large as its cousin, the Grancerf, it is arguably a more successful species due to its wider natural range, as it is far more common.
Lumen Deer get their name from their limited photomantic abilities. Both sexes have large, bright spots and stripes on their fur which can produce bursts of light. When threatened by a predator, the deer will channel energy into these spots and stripes, and unleash it all at once in a bright burst. In essence: before they start running from a predator, they always flash-bang it first, thus gaining a few extra seconds to escape.
The males of this species also grow antlers that produce an even brighter light. This is due to the social structure of the Lumen Deer. Typically, females live in groups of 10 to 15 individuals. If a predator appears, all herd members will flash-bang it at the same time, amplifying each other's flashes. Males, on the other hand, lead a solitary lifestyle. Being alone means that they need to produce stronger flashes of light to effectively avoid predators. However, there is a time when they become more vulnerable. Once the mating season is over, the males will shed their antlers and, for a few months, are more susceptible to predation. For the species as a whole, this is a type of "genetic test" as only the most alert and quick-witted males can survive this dangerous time.
The antlers shed by Lumen Deer are a valuable resource. Their light-producing qualities make them a perfect conduit for Light Potions and Light-based enchantments. Adventuring parties are often hired to search and recover as many shed antlers as they can find, thus earning a pretty penny.
