More concept work for "The Rescuers that follow". Poor Clary went home in disgrace with her mother chewing her out. Adding insult to injury, Rene' suspends Clary from going with her to the Society building. Much of the sequence is abridged here. There's more of a discussion and news that Clary's father wouldn't be coming home that night due to a prior engagement keeping him longer than expected. Clary writes a single entry in her journal and can't seem to write any more. Instead, she gives up and goes to sleep through the afternoon while her mother goes back to work to try and salvage things. Poor girl.

Adulting is ... complicated Clary... This is but a taste of things ahead but don't let it weigh you down. Given some time, I think you'll come to understand things better and stand a better change trying for a spot on the Agent roster.

Yeah, I got tired of that "dead parents" trope. I like to write my characters with family members. I tend to think it makes them more interesting. I always felt like the "dead parents" trope was a shortcut to character sympathy and or motivation (in the case of the big bad killed the parents). The trope has its place, sure. I don't entirely avoid it in regard to one character in this story. In fact, I go into brief detail with it for that emotional impact. But, I feel like it's overall, over used.
