"A young Magpie on a voyage to glean arcane knowledge in pursuit of his craft"
This was the idea that sparked the creation of my first TTRPG character, Tinker, the Kenku Artificer. A small and eccentric Magpie, his first steps into the world may have been rocky but he quickly grew into a valued member of the team, disarming traps, setting new traps, stepping into said traps and peppering enemies from afar with his repeating shot crossbow. He was accompanied everywhere by his Homunculus Servant "Click-Whistle", a small golden clockwork crab, and later on by other golems he unearthed, rescued and repaired along the way. :]
Background:
Tinker doesn't remember much of his past, but he grew up aboard the "Misthawk", a Privateer vessel that prowled the dense fog of the Wrymridge shores, a common hiding place for brigands and pirates alike. Alongside the other seamen, 'bird' quickly learned the basic chores and duties aboard ship, from scaling the mast to trim sails to scraping barnacles from the hull on their rare days in port.
Over time, 'bird's' attention was drawn to the Misthawk's twin ballista's, the ship's main armament, and during the rare moment's of calm he would stand and study the great weapons earnestly. Taking note of this, the Quartermaster took 'bird' under his watch and taught him the basics of weapon maintenance and assembly. Not long after, when 'bird' started suggesting improvements the officer affectionately nicknamed him 'Tinker', a name which was quickly adopted by the rest.
With a newfound purpose amongst the Misthawk's crew, and under the Quartermaster's tutelage, Tinker attained a profound understanding of basic mechanisms and a strong desire to learn more. After one successful engagement with an enemy vessel, one made possible due to Tinker's ingenuity, the Captain gifted the small Kenku with a crossbow from the spoils while his mentor provided him with choice components from his own collection. After a long week in port celebrating, Tinker expressed a desire to learn more, and was given leave to do so by the master of the Misthawk, along with a token of their ship to remember them by. They stayed an additional night in port to bid farewell and see Tinker off, and left on the morning tide.
Utilising his shipmate's connections, Tinker spends his time travelling back and forth across the oceans of the world, learning and exploring and off on adventures as he pursues his passion.
