"A Good Day for Pancakes" (Thursday Prompt - 4/25/2024)
Six-thirty couldn’t come soon enough. Laila had been dragging herself through four months of late nights, and they all finally caught up with the overworked labrador retriever. Third shifts at the hospital used to be a slow breeze - a chance for the nursing students to rack up hours and study while the veteran nurses pocketed some extra cash. But ever since the aggressive layoffs this past winter, nothing about Laila’s life had been breezy.
Her son, bless his heart, had just tested out of fourth grade in the fall, and he was rushing through his final year of elementary school like it was nothing. If Laila had any chance of encouraging his curious genius, she had to get him to a better school district before he started middle school. Taking on another nursing position stretched her sanity but could afford them enough surplus cash to cover the moving costs. It would be more than worth it to her. Her pup was her everything.
The few precious moments she got with August as her late night ended and his day began were a light at the end of this dim tunnel. Every morning, when she shuffled through the front door with her tail hanging low, Laila would be greeted with a goofy smile that shone brighter than the sun. August would squeeze her legs tightly and his “good morning, Momma” would whistle through the gap in his teeth. In that magnificent moment, she would be rejuvenated and ready to hear all about his fantastical dreams from the night before.
August was certain that he was destined to be an award-winning playwright, then a swashbuckling pirate, and then a rambunctious Renaissance sculptor. Recently, he’d been scheming his way to become a daring fighter pilot like his father. Watching him don his flight suit costume and take flight from the “cockpit” of his dad’s old recliner put Laila over the moon. She saw so much of her spouse’s adventurous spirit in little August.
The chime of a blue call light interrupted Laila’s peaceful introspection and she hustled over to her pneumonia patient. Her duties as a mum would have to wait; there were others that needed her help.

decided this next keyword would be supplement, with the added challenge of making it a story of exactly 365 words. I went with a story about a hardworking mum tackling two jobs to pay for a better education for her son. I ended up writing a couple additional pages (included as a PDF up top), but the original short story is posted above! Thanks for reading!
