Specification Overload. I spent almost 30 years as a programmer/systems analyst. If we let the user/customer/business partner (notice that all three contain the letters USER, in order) design their own want list, this is the sort of result we'd get. Then they complained when the time estimate was over a year.

If we let the user/customer/business partner (notice that all three contain the letters USER, in order) design their own want list, this is the sort of result we'd get. Then they complained when the time estimate was over a year.
The way I think of commissions is I am paying the artist for their style and contribution to the piece. As such, allowing artistic freedom gives the artist that room to impart their own touch and interpretation. I figure if I want something done in an exact way, I'll do it myself.
