The servants knocked at her door as they heard the growling and howling. She meekly replied nothing was wrong. Most of the servants were frightened and happy to be apparently unneeded, but one maid stayed and persisted. Her voice was tiny and small, and it pierced the wolf-headed woman's self pity. She was hungry and exhausted and had bitten herself badly, so she unlocked the door and hurried back to her bed and drew the canopy 'round it.
She stuck out only her arm for the servant to dress her bite marks. "Aren't you afraid?" she asked.
"I am not afraid of wolves," the maid replied. "In the old country, my village hunt them."
The wolf-headed woman didn't know what else to say, so then she meekly asked for some supper to be brought to her and left near the door for her to dine alone.
