At first I just wrote a small simple thank you and some notes about the story but it became so much more when I started thinking after I uploaded the text. Here is therefore a more detailed text about how I thought when I wrote my story. When I wrote the story, I never thought how some of the characters change psychologically, but when I later noticed it, it became interesting. There is so much more to this story than what the dragons do. Part of the story is actually about development.
Ha ha Wow, what a journey it has been. I did not expect that there would be a total of 60 chapters when I started writing Dragon Life. I had an idea of roughly what would happen and which characters would be involved. But the story has changed over the time I've been writing it and I've added more characters. Some of them are with quite a lot while others less.
Hasse and Madelene are the main characters, apart from the dragons then, and I already had ideas early on about how they would meet and later develop. Madelene has made Hasse take more responsibility. It is clearly felt towards the end of the story. Hasse is very passive in the beginning when he notices that the dragons are creating chaos. It's like he doesn't care what happens to the people he doesn't know. Hasse intends to call the defense a few times after the events in Åby and Mölndal but he doesn't do it and blames himself for not having time but in reality he has all the time in the world to call.
But after meeting Madelene twice and getting the dragon's diarrhea over him, Hasse slowly but surely begins to take responsibility for what the dragons are doing and decides to stop them. What finally convinces Hasse that the dragons must be stopped is when he sees a massive flock of dragons coming over Liseberg and when he and Madelene have to hide from the dragons in a cave. It clearly shows that Hasse has developed as a person and that is positive. But even though Hasse has evolved and wants to stop the dragons, he can still feel sad when the male he saw hatch at his house dies.
Hasse also feels sorry for the dragon queen because she is alone, but that changes when he sees her giving birth to baby dragons instead of laying eggs. Hasse is now disgusted by the dragon queen and it's all about psychology. Hasse found the three eggs and saw two of them hatch. He has also seen several eggs when he has visited the cave when the male lived. But now that he sees her giving birth, his knowledge of how dragons work is no longer correct and it affects his psyche so that he feels disgusted by what is happening. Hasse's feelings of disgust also make it easier for him to trick the dragon queen and plant the bombs.
But even after the dragon queen is dead, Hasse can't leave the dragons and it shows when he dreams a nightmare about Madelene giving birth to a baby dragon. Here his disgust at what the dragon queen did is mixed in, but also his own thoughts about gradualism, but even if all dragons are really dead. The next day when Hasse and Madelene get married and meet the dolphins, Hasse makes an active choice and deletes the videos of the dragon queen giving birth. He has somehow said a mental goodbye to the dragons and is ready to think about other things. Hasse has thus developed once again as a person. He can put the dragons behind him.
Madelene doesn't feel sad that the dragons die, but she doesn't like the dragons and especially not that Hasse goes so close to them when he shows her the cave. Madelene never accompanied Hasse when he stood in front of the dying male that he himself saw hatched at his home. She doesn't want him to go out to the dragon, but Hasse is stubborn. Madelene is a person who likes to live in the present and not dwell on things that have happened before. It is clearly noticeable when they are in Mallorca and Madelene gets angry because Hasse has brought the report about the dragons with him.
But the reason is not only that it is their honeymoon, but that Madelene has pleaded and asked Hasse to forget about the dragons and so he still takes the report to Mallorca. Madelene has already forgotten the dragons but Hasse hasn't and she thinks the trip will be even better if he forgets them completely. The main reason why Madelene wants to go to Mallorca is so that Hasse can forget the dragons more easily, but she has not explained that. She expects Hasse to understand it automatically but he never does until they meet the dolphins. Madelene likes animals but not as much as Hasse does but she understands that he likes animals, apart from the dragons.
The situation changes when Hasse and Madelene are going home from Mallorca. The defense and the military have failed to kill every single dragon and they have multiplied even faster and completely destroyed all of Gothenburg. This time Madelene cares about the dragons and there are two big reasons for that.
1 Their apartment is feared to be completely destroyed
2 Madelene has an unborn child in her womb.
Both Hasse and Madelene have to find a new apartment or villa and it affects them both, but this time Hasse also hates the dragons. Hasse no longer thinks positively about when the two baby dragons hatched with him. Now the dragons are his enemies instead.
Another example of characters who are involved a lot are Olle and Liselott. They weren't meant to be there from the start but they are both interesting people and at least Olle changes the lives of many when he lays eggs and later gives birth to baby dragons.
Olle changes a lot after he kills Liselott and he lets his dragon instincts take over completely. If Liselott had been allowed to live longer, it would have taken longer for Olle to become a beast. It's quite interesting here with Olle's transformation into a beast. All humans have a wild side within us but we have learned not to let it show unless we get really angry.
Olle is a nice person in the beginning but after he poops so much in his apartment, something happens to his psyche and he lets the beast inside him come out. It doesn't get any easier that he's also turned into a dragon. Admittedly, he suspects that he has been poisoned when he starts pooping a lot, but it is not until the next day that he actually attacks his best friend and eats her. Once Olle's best friend Liselott is dead, it's as if he doesn't care about the other neighbors but chooses to kill them and feed them to his dragon cubs. Olle is cruel to the people when he decides their fate and it clearly shows how his psyche has changed.
It is only when Olle dies and ends up in heaven and meets Liselott again that his attitude changes. Since Liselott died, Olle has not cared about what happens to the people, only his offspring. When Liselott asks about what has happened after she died, Olle begins to remember what he has done and he begins to understand that he has behaved terribly badly.
But Olle does not dare to tell about everything he has done. Olle says that there were several dragons that he lost control of, but that is not true. After Olle has swallowed Martin, the task leader from Åby, he is the one who says that he and the other dragons will set fire to Gutav Adolf's square. Olle is so ashamed that he does not dare to tell Liselott the truth. Olle knows that Liselott will dislike him for what he has done, so he lies to her.
But Olle also realizes that the dragons must be stopped before they invade all of Sweden and only now that Olle begins to develop and take proper responsibility for what he has done. Once he realizes what must be done, he is not in the least hesitant. It is clearly noticeable on the second day when he asks if Lars can help. Admittedly, the dragons start fighting and eating each other on this day and Stockholm's defense sends down Phosphine bombs all over Gothenburg, but Olle doesn't know that it will happen.
An interesting detail with Olle and Liselott that I wanted to mention is that from the beginning when I introduced Olle, he didn't know Liselott but instead another girl called Beata. Olle bites Beata and she also turns into a dragon and the two mate and Beata soon lays tons of dragon eggs. Olle is not so nice in this version and it comes out that he has been stalking Beata for many years but she only finds out when the eggs hatch. The truth is the hardest for Beata because she trusts Olle. A lot of strange and bizarre things happen to both Olle and Beata. Some of the things that happen are Olle's fault, but he takes no responsibility at all and blames Beata.
I will post the individual chapters where Olle and Beata are in, and they may well be considered some kind of bonus material
I felt that the readers would probably dislike Olle and Beata was a somewhat boring character so I removed her and introduced Liselott instead and changed Olle's character a lot so that he didn't come across as a douge bag. Since it's a fictional story, I let Olle lay eggs and it worked.
Now I just want to write a few things about the dragons before I write about some other characters.
Each dragon is a unique individual and they have different characteristics. Someone who is fair and cares about how other dragons feel and feels and fits well as a pack leader. Another only cares about himself and ignores others. Someone gets sexually aroused when things burn, like a pyromaniac. Someone else is spewing fire because everyone else is doing it. Some other dragon thinks things are wrong but doesn't dare speak up.
The dragons spew fire and I have tried to describe what happens when, for example, they spew their fire through a bedroom window and the contents of the wardrobes catch fire. I have asked two firefighters about various things, but more on that further down in the text. The dragons can vary the heat of their fire from around 400 degrees and all the way up to 2000 degrees. It depends on how hard they press on the organ in the stomach where the fiery gas is.
The dragons communicate with their own language and also through different facial expressions. The dragons also use different scents but it is mostly when the females are willing to mate. I have chosen to let the reader read what the dragons say on some occasions. An example is when their alpha leader is killed on Liseberg and there is a fight between the dragons.
The female dragons and the dragon queens lay eggs and what separates them is that the dragon queens' eggs are produced faster in the ovaries and that they are more numerous. A normal female dragon lays between 50 to 55 eggs while a dragon queen lays between 70 to 75 eggs. The dragon queens are significantly larger than the normal female dragons. The dragon queens cannot leave their caves except to drop their feces just outside the cave and gather material for their nests. Therefore, their males always fetch food. The only dragon besides the female dragons and dragon queens that can lay eggs is Olle and that's because he undergoes a minor evolution when he gets bitten. A real evolution happens when the dragons start to give birth instead of laying eggs.
The dragons don't develop through the story but they do evolve. Instead of laying eggs, they start giving birth and their offspring also give birth after a few days. The dragons also become more cautious and smarter after they evolve. None of the dragons try to eat the meat that Martin brings with him when he comes to Gustav Adolf's square. Olle does tell the dragons not to eat the meat, but they sniff it and smell the poison and understand that it is dangerous.
The dragons that have been poisoned before have not been able to smell the poison but after the dragons have evolved they can. The dragons have also started to cooperate more and therefore they manage to burn up the Gothenburg airport very quickly and also attack all defense bases and military bases which means that no one can stop them.
Some readers may wonder why the dragons get diarrhea when they eat kebabs. The explanation is simple. The dragon's gut reacts negatively to the spices and cooking fat in the kebab. They have no problem with regular beef. If they eat a lot of cows in a short time, they may start to vomit. I was inspired by the scene in Jurassic Park as well as Jurassic Park 3 when some visitors discover large piles of poo. It is reasonable that the piles of poo from a dragon become large and it does not become less if they also get diarrhea. Maybe it's a little silly that they poop so much, but that's how it is in nature. Just look at the elephants or the cows. The pooing is included for a certain "shock factor"
Now to some of the other characters.
The characters who are most present apart from Hasse, Madelene, Olle and Liselott are the two mission leaders. One comes from Åby and is called Martin and the other comes from Toltorp and is called Robert. It is Martin who notices the dragons' progress first and that is because the dragons attack Åby first and later also Mölndal.
I made a small mistake about Martin, I never mentioned his name until quite late and by then Robert had already been introduced. That it turned out like that is due to carelessness and laziness on my part. Every time Martin was there, I just copy-pasted "The task leader from Åby" and didn't think that I hadn't introduced him properly. Martin does quite a lot of work in the beginning. He collects the dragons' poo and semen and sends it to Stockholm for analysis. However, he misses checking through the caves near Åby. It is a big mistake and the question is whether a "real" defense and task leader would have made such a fatal mistake. Probably not.
Martin blames everything on Hasse, but he himself has a responsibility to protect the country. The question is whether, after all, he is not a little too lazy for his own good. But he takes on more responsibility later in the story and helps burn dead dragons in a dump and also retrieve the bombs that Hasse places in the cave where the last dragon queen is. Martin also drives to the city and has poisoned meat with him when he realizes that the dragons are not dead after all. He even tries to trick Olle into eating the meat but fails because Olle has become smarter and can smell the poison. Even though Martin knows that the dragons are dangerous, he lures Olle out by calling his name and stands in front of him. It still indicates that Martin is prepared to take risks in order to stop the dragons. Unfortunately, it doesn't go as he wants, and Martin is swallowed alive by Olle.
The second task leader, Robert, manages to capture a dragon when they have reached Toltorp and he brings the dragon to the defense base and begins to experiment on the dragon to get to know its weaknesses better. Robert lets a person who has worked on the defense be swallowed alive by the captured dragon and the person carries some small cameras that are used when doing colonoscopy. Colonoscopy is when a doctor sends cameras into a person's stomach and intestines to discover why they are not working properly in sick patients. Robert can now see the dragon's stomach and intestines from the inside and he learns how fast their digestion is. It is also Robert who tries to give the dragon meat that is injected with a nerve agent and the dragon later dies. Robert uses the nerve poison when he kills several dragons in the city. Robert thus does much more than Martin does.
Robert tries to help several people on Liseberg when several dragons spray fire and he manages to save around 7 people out of around 60. Robert takes it very hard when he manages to save so few people. Robert later borrows Hasse's dragon horn and lures several dragons to the Castle Forest where they are killed by being shot down. Hasse advises Robert that there may be dragons in several caves and Robert makes contact with a farmer who has lost many animals because of the dragons. Robert also plans how the dragons in the caves and mines will die and Martin helps him and they analyze the blood from the dragons and discover that they can reproduce even more explosively if a DNA is activated.
Martin slowly but surely begins to feel stupid because he never looked in the caves and mines in Åby and that makes him decide to forbid Hasse to comment on the dragons. Martin obviously does it to avoid being questioned about why he never checked the caves and mines in Åby.
Robert develops early as a person and takes great responsibility, while Martin develops late, but by then it is already too late.
Finally, we have a character who appears a few times in the story. That person's name is Håkan and he witnesses several dragons spraying fire at several villas in Åby and he decides to warn some people he knows in the area. Håkan also saves some tourists from being burned by the dragons.
Håkan is also included later in the story when several flocks of dragons have flown to Gothenburg city and are creating chaos. Some dragons vomit on Håkan's car and he helps some people who run into each other because of the vomiting dragons. Håkan calls the ambulance so that the injured receive care and he talks to the people who have been injured and cares about them. Håkan is thus a hero the times he appears in the story.
The other characters aren't around so much that you can say much about them. Most of them are ordinary people who happen to get in the way of the dragons. Lasse and Bertil tell Hasse how it happened that the two dead dragons were in the cave when Hasse found the three eggs, They thus give some backstory to what has happened before.
So, I've talked about the characters and who they are and their characteristics and it's time for some facts about some places that appear in the story.
The cave that Hasse falls into and is called the Hugo cave exists in reality and it is located near a forest in Åby, although I have exaggerated the distance between the cave and the villa area. The cave is as big as I have described it and has been used to hide contraband liquor but the year and the names of the people have been changed so that no one related to the culprits will recognize the names or the year and get angry. That sort of thing can be sensitive even if the crime is prescriptive.
There is also an older mine in Åby, but I have exaggerated its size so that the dragons can fit. Some of the other caves/mines that appear in the story also exist in reality but the size and their location are changed. Some of the caves/mines are completely made up and exist only in the imagination.
The large villa area in Åby where the dragons create chaos exists in reality but is larger than my description and things are changed so that no one in the villas should feel sad that the dragons ignite their villas in my story.
The apartment building that Olle and Liselott live in exists in reality but has a different color and is located in a different place on the Avenyn than it does in my story. Even the park exists but is smaller than it is in my story.
The apartment building that Hasse and Madelene move into also exists in reality but is not as close to Liseberg as it is in my story and I have changed how it is described than how it looks in reality. There is a small cafe nearby as well but it is not as close to the apartment building as in my story.
The cave on Liseberg where Hasse and Madelene are hiding does not exist in reality, nor does the water park with a large swimming pool and similar things. A bathhouse with an adventure pool is built where that part of the action takes place. Otherwise, I have described Liseberg as it appears. The distance between some attractions is slightly exaggerated, but otherwise the description of the park matches reality.
Some of the defense bases exist in reality but are smaller than in the story. The landfill where the dragons are burned also exists in reality and is active. I have exaggerated the size of the dump so that they can burn the dead dragons in the story.
It may seem strange that no one at Liseberg reacts to the fire-breathing and pooping dragons flying into the park and continues to let visitors into the park even though there are many dragons in the park. The reason is probably mostly due to a lack of communication between those who let the visitors in and those who are responsible for security in the park. Those sitting in the cash registers are not ordered to stop letting visitors in until Robert arrives in the city and questions the person sitting in the cash register.
One problem is that the dragons attack in "waves". Many dragons come to Liseberg and hardly any visitors enter when they are there, but after the dragons have left, the park starts to fill up with visitors again. But the dragons return several times and each time the humans believe they will not come back.
The fact that the dragons poop on the people is perhaps not perceived as seriously as when they spray fire on them and swallow several visitors alive.
A state of emergency should be introduced in the city when the police, fire brigade and defense notice what is happening. But no one takes any responsibility and does it. When the dragons attack the next day as well, the sound "hesa Fredrik" is heard and the public is warned about the dragons. But by then it is already too late for several people who have already died due to the chaos of the dragons.
The descriptions of the other places that appear in the story match reality quite well, but various minor details may have changed.
Some people who appear in my story exist in reality. These are; Markoolio, Gruppen Kite, Bert Karlsson, Lotta Engberg and Håkan Hellström.
Some of the songs that Håkan Hellström sings in the story exist in reality, while others are made up by me.
Well, that was some facts about the places that appear in the story and now for something else.
As a writer, it is an interesting question whether you yourself have developed when you have written a story. I think I have somehow done it BUT:
1 I easily "get caught up" on details that aren't really that important and some of the details take up more space than they really need. Readers can probably imagine what dragon poo looks like and smells like, but still, I've put in the effort to describe the properties of poo. A bit silly actually when I think about it.
2 Although I made a "timeline" of what will happen in each chapter and how many there will be, I have several times moved each chapter forward and made more because I have come up with more things to happen. I have thus not followed my first plans completely. Some of the chapters may be unnecessary but I have enjoyed writing them. It's hard to say if the chapters have gotten better when there have been so many.
Halfway into the story I started to write more about the relationships and thoughts of the people involved than the chaos of the dragons. I had already described when they ignited several villas and houses and pooped, so I felt that those descriptions might not be so important.
However, I described in detail when the dragon queen in the Hugo cave began to give birth, but then I also describe Hasse's reactions to what is happening. Hasse reacts strongly when he sees the dragon queen giving birth, even though he found out in the car to Åby that it can happen.
I also describe when Olle and several other dragons give birth but it's mostly because I think the concept of birthing dragons is so cool somehow. I thought it was fun to describe what some of the dragons sound like when they give birth. They are really loud by themselves.
The very ending with the dragon flying to Borås is a classic Hollywood ending. All is peace and joy but something has survived.
Finally, I have a few people to thank, so I think I'll start right away.
I want to thank my girlfriend Katrin for her comments and thoughts on the story. Incidentally, Katrin has had to read each chapter before I have posted them online. Sometimes Katrin has pointed out things in my story that she thought felt a bit like that and I have then changed certain details. Katrin has served coffee when she has noticed that I have needed it. There have been long nights sometimes when I have been writing.
I also have to thank my mother and father for their comments on the story. They have read the entire story in batches and they have enjoyed most of it. There are some details that they didn't like, but they liked the story as a whole.
I also thank those who told me about the cave and what it was used for once upon a time. Their names are fingered; Ulla, Kent, Marie and Janne.
I have to thank my best friends Jörgen and Annette for their comments on the story. They also got to read it and they liked it. Annette was greatly amused by the birthing dragons.
I also thank the fire brigade and especially Göran and Tobias when they answered questions about how fires behave in different situations. They also showed how dangerous ordinary cotton can be when it catches fire. Scary to see considering how much cotton most people have in their wardrobes.
I thank Mats and Fredrik for the very exciting walks on two large defense bases. It was really exciting to wander around there.
I thank the Police officers Gert and Adam for taking the time to answer my questions about how society would have functioned if fire-breathing dragons had caused chaos.
Thanks to Pierre for our discussions about the pooping dragons. There have been many laughs between us.
Thanks to Olle for our pleasant coffee times and because he thought it was fun that a character in the story has the same first name as him.
Thanks to Sofia at Borås zoo who showed me when one of the giraffes gave birth up close. It was really cool to see so close and it gave me several ideas when I wrote about the birthing dragons.
I thank Martin for our discussions about my story. Martin is a very good work colleague and has come up with funny angles sometimes when I have locked myself into some detail about the story.
I also thank Patrick G who is unfortunately no longer with us. RIP my friend.
Yes, now I'm leaving the world of dragons and focusing on other stories. Hope you enjoyed my long story.
