The Eastern part of the Patapsco Valley contained many granite quarries, and a great deal of the granite used in early DC and Baltimore buildings and monuments came from the area. Most of teh quarries have long closed or been washed away, but there are some still operating. One of the things I love is that this view could easily be in rural Colorado or West Virginia, but there are something like 3 million people at least within an hour's drive.
