I decided to update Onyx's backstory, starting by showing how he looked when he was still alive. A young lad who grew up with riches only for all of it and his happiness to come crashing down with the swiftness of a blade.
Let's start from the beginning.
He was born in a modest home with his mother and father. His mother was a music teacher while his father was a sailor. Early in his life, his family was struck with tragedy when his father was lost at sea, never to be heard from again. His mother struggled to raise him and make ends meet as she wasn't paid much as a music teacher, much less as a female music teacher. Onyx stayed by his mother's side as was the only man in her life...that was until she met a college headmaster and private tutor named Mr. Fillet. He was divorced and had his eyes on Onyx's mother for quite some time. Due to certain circumstances, he could not marry her himself so he instead moved her and Onyx into his chateau on his private estate.
While Onyx didn't see Mr. Fillet as a father or a stepfather figure, he did respect him. He often would give Onyx private lessons on a multitude of subjects. Despite this however Onyx clearly enjoyed learning music from his mother. The piano being his favorite instrument to play. Mr. Fillet would host many gatherings and let Onyx perform for guest as well as shower him with many gifts and luxuries. Three particular guests would show up to these parties. They were Mr. Fillet's three estranged sons. They had distanced themselves from their father after he divorced their mother while she was deathly ill. He also had very traditional views.
When writing his will Mr. Fillet put all of his money, land, and belongings in Onyx's mother's name leaving absolutely nothing for his own sons. Several years later Mr. Fillet would pass away, and sure enough all his belongings and wealth went to Onyx's mother. Even though she grieved the loss of her second partner, she made the most of the fortune he left her. She and Onyx took many vacations and trips which allowed them to bond and become even closer. She also reached out to her late partner's sons hoping that they could build a new bond after losing someone important to them. Little did she know that she sealed the fate of her and her son.
The three estranged sons would often visit the chateau and all seemed dandy. However shortly after they started visiting Onyx's mother would complain about having terrible headaches and they often would suggest that drink a special tea that they would bring every visit. After months of headaches she went to visit Onyx in his bedroom to kiss him goodnight. That would be their final interaction before she passed away in her sleep during the night, potentially from being poisoned. Onyx was completely overtaken with grief. He refused to eat or properly clean himself for weeks. He just laid by his mother's bedside and wept loudly. Before her death his mother wrote her own will and had him be her successor allowing him to keep the wealth. Even though he couldn't cared less about the money.
The three brothers were furious upon hearing about the arrangement, but they had a plan. You see shortly after being taken in, a revolution was starting to spread throughout the country filling people's heads with new and liberating ideas. Onyx and his mother were neutral about the whole affair while Mr. Fillet was very against it. The three brothers however were very much into it and were even a part of a special committee to make things happen in benefit of the revolution.
The youngest brother would visit Onyx often and help him eat and bathe. He even got him to play music again. To Onyx it was someone finally taking pity on his soul. To the brother he was collecting "evidence" to use against him and win back his father's fortune. On one fidget night, Onyx was awoken and arrested as he had been charged with treason. He was obviously completely blindsided, during his trial he tried to prove his innocence, but the brothers had plenty of "evidence" against him. Such as him playing a patriotic song on the piano which was banned. He explained that he didn't know about the ban and that the song was the first song his mother taught him and that his "stepbrother" requested for him to play it. His explanations were brushed off. Other evidence of his treason included a man pretending to be his lost father testifying against him. Ultimately, he was found guilty and sentenced to death.
He was silent while being brought to his cell. However throughout the night he wailed and cried for two weeks straight, the guards referred to him as a banshee. Early in the morning on December 12th he was dressed in plain white pajamas and put in a cart to be hauled to the scaffold. People watched him from the streets some even threw food at him. He cried hot steamy tears that would melt the snow beneath him, but he didn't make a single noise. After arriving to the scaffold he declined a final speech as he stared up at the ominous guillotine, the latest death contraption. He was strapped to the board and put into position. The thing shook violently as the blade fell towards Onyx's neck and then... it was over. His body was dragged to the cemetery by the three brothers to where his own mother was buried. To add insult to injury the brothers secretly brought axes with them to cut Onyx's body into more pieces to fully satisfy their vengeance.
Due to the unfair way that Onyx died, he was turned into a ghost and was brought to a realm known as Spectrium. A sort of limbo if you will. After wandering for years he eventually would meet a ghost Skunk named Ross. Ross would tease and lightly bully him, but with no one else in the realm he decided to befriend the skunk. This is also where he got the name Onyx, as his hard had become blackened by sorrow and as fragile as glass. After meeting Ross he refuses to discuss what his life was like before death, and is often reluctant to visit the living realm outside of Halloween...
