Maylene, Elekid and Buneary - Gangstargab
You won't believe for how long I wanted a drawing with any of these three.
Pokémon was always one of my favorite franchises, the games, the anime, the impact it had in popular culture, growing up, I always found something related to it and it even became an important part of my childhood. The reason why it took me so long to get something was because I wanted the idea to be a good one, and after years, finally got something with my favorite Gym Leader, Maylene, one of my favorite Pokémon, Elekid, and the Pokémon I found the cutest, Buneary.
As I discussed the details with my good friend gabsgabs she quickly came up with the composition. What can I say? I'm a fan of her work and it's always a pleasure getting something from her. Not only did Gabi uploaded the drawing on her DA account, but she also has a Patreon where you can see some exclusive content and also get the chance of supporting.

Now, if you want to see how the Pink-haired gal found those two Pokémon, read the story down below.
SUNRISE
The end of another usual day for Maylene.
As she talked with her last challenges of the day, mentioning how impressed she was with his Pokémon and his strategy, the pink-haired gal smiled before handing him the badge. In the past, Maylene would have continued to talk with the trainer for a moment, but after years struggling with her own thoughts, she remained silent, dropping the fake expression of calmness once the trainer left her dojo.
The last time she felt like that was during her first year as a Gym Leader, struggling with the idea of how others would perceive her and if she was up to the same level as the other Sinnoh Gym Leaders, trainers that not only she considered close friends, but also admired. Thanks to their support, and also the aid of her own team, the pink-haired gal felt at ease and got enough confidence to continue, showing each challenger that came to her dojo what kind of Gym Leader she was, but 10 years with the same routine, a new conflicting thought took over her as Maylene didn’t perceive herself as a good Gym Leader anymore.
She still had countless trainers that wanted to battle against her and her team remained strong, with the duet of Lucario and Riolu being the aces of her team. The only issue was that after all that time, the short-haired gal felt that her efforts were not that good, thinking about how other Gym Leaders got more impact and having the idea that she wasn’t as memorable as them. There were other Fighting-Type trainers in each region and out of all, Maylene felt that she was both the weakest and the one that everyone forgets.
In an attempt to stop thinking about those bad ideas, Maylene started leaving her home earlier than usual with the excuse that she was trying a new type of training when in reality she did it to have a moment with herself and her thoughts. As the pink-haired gal went back to her first year as a Gym Leader, thinking about what she did to feel better, she went to the outskirts of Veilstone City and stayed there until she really had to go back with her real training.
“Well, it helped the last time, hope this time it has the same effect, even though I’m no longer that scared girl I was,” Maylene said in a quiet tone while sitting close to a lake. By the way she talked, even though she had a hard time believing those words. Yes, she was a leader for all that time and had some good moments, but sometimes, the short-haired gal went back to being that shy girl, someone who struggled even to train with her own Pokémon.
Before that moment, Maylene always looked back at her first year as a Gym Leader fondly, liking the fact that she changed and became a better trainer, but now, the only times the pink-haired gal thought about that year was when she needed to remind herself how to react during the combats against the trainers and their Pokémon. It was a big effort for her having to put on that facade each day and she worried that she couldn’t hide her demotivation anymore.
“I bet Candice, Gardenia and Fantina don’t have these kinds of problems. How could they? All are strong trainers, are well-known, they are even considered some of the prettiest girls in the whole region. And what am I known for?” Maylene asked herself while looking down in shame. During her tenure as a Gym Leader, she got to meet important trainers from all around the regions and even had the chance to talk with them, but thanks to her own doubts, thinking about those good moments made her struggle even more. “I don’t think I’m known for anything. Having pink hair and a Lucario and a Riolu on my team? Maybe that’s why I don’t have that much of an impact.”
Almost on the verge of tears, Maylene tried to calm herself, thinking again about her own promise of remaining as the Gym Leader of Veilstone City until the day she felt she had to retire. Her fears were still there, haunting her, but the last thing she wanted was to break her own promise. Taking one deep breath and reminding herself that she was there to try to find a solution to her problems instead of feeling bad for herself, Maylene decided to take one of the sweets she put in her bag, but as the short-haired gal looked at it, she found out that there was a Pokémon close to it.
“Hi?” She didn’t expect to find herself with a Pokémon that early in the morning, nor expected to see an Elekid as they were not common in that route. Although the pink-haired gal was still with her own issues, she never let that affect the way she treated Pokémon. It didn’t matter if it was one of the members of her team, one Pokémon of one of the trainers or even the wild ones, Maylene always acted nicely with them. Seeing the way he acted, she deduced that the small Pokémon was looking for something to eat and as Maylene took one of the Poké Puffs she always carried for the Pokémon of her team, she took out another before handing it to the Elekid. “Here. Take it.”
The Elekid eyed Maylene for a moment before carefully taking the sweet from the Gym Leader. She expected the small electric Pokémon to eat in front of her, but instead, the Elekid went back to the bushes to share it with a Buneary. Seeing the way the two small Pokémon enjoyed the Poké Puff made her smile, glad to see that someone was feeling good. Wanting to do more, she invented them to come closer, offering them more of the sweets she got. Even though the small electric Pokémon had his doubts, being protective over the cheerful rabbit, after she nodded at him, the two accepted the invitation and sat at each side of Maylene.
As she gave them more Poké Puffs, the pink-haired gal remembered hearing about a group of trainers leaving their Pokémon behind, considering them small and weak. She heard those rumors before yet, Maylene never got the chance of knowing more, but seeing the two small Pokémon and how they reacted to her, she knew that they were the ones that were abandoned. “I’ll never understand how a trainer can do this to their Pokémon. Leaving them behind at the mercy of other Pokemon or trainers. How can someone do that?” Maylene thought while giving her last two Poké Puffs to Elekid and Buneary.
In a way, the two reminded her of herself. She was a fighting-type Gym Leader yet, the short-haired gal was someone small and was perceived as weak by others. Even though her team was solely made of fighting-type Pokémon, Maylene never looked down at another Pokémon and was willing to help them one way or another. What she liked the most about that encounter was their reactions as both the Elekid and the Buneary were happy with the way she treated them. The pink-haired gal wanted to stay for a while, until the sunrise came, reminding her that she had to go back to her real training.
“It was nice meeting you two, hope to see you again soon” Maylene said while petting the heads of the two small Pokémon. At first, the Fighting-type Gym Leader was worried about her day, thinking about her fears and her doubts yet, when she went back to her dojo, she felt calm. Everything was the same, the same routine, moments with her Pokémon and trainers that wanted a badge. Not only that, but after handing the challenger his badge, for the first time in weeks, she showed a real smile instead of a fake one.
Thinking about what happened, she remembered her encounter with the Elekid and Buneary and how she enjoyed seeing them. Maylene couldn’t let go of the fact that their trainers left them behind as they perceived them as weak for being small. She always saw potential in everyone she met, from trainers to Pokémon and as thanks to that encounter, the pink-haired gal decided to go to the same lake the next day to see the two Pokémon again and to also thank them with her own problems.
As morning came, Maylene took her bag and went to the same place as before, this time finding that the Buneary was waiting for her. “Hello! Nice to see you again,” the pink-haired gal said while benting down. Just like the last time, Maylene petted her head before offering the Poké Puff for her to enjoy. Looking for the Elekid, short-haired gal noticed that he was behind a tree, obviously still doubting her. Showing him that she was nice, she took another Poké Puff from her bag and offered it to him. “For you. Come on, there’s nothing to worry about. I know you want to have it.”
Looking at Maylene again and noticing how the cute rabbit Pokémon was enjoying her sweet, he walked where the Gym Leader was and accepted the Poké Puff. By his demeanor, it was obvious that the small electric had a hard time trusting in others. The way he also acted with the Buneary made Maylene understand that he always looked for her, protecting her from other Pokémon and dangers. She still could see herself in those two, with one being motivated and cheerful while the other trying to always improve. The pink-haired gal chuckled softly as she continued giving the two small Pokémon more sweets from there to enjoy while she talked with them, mentioning how much their encounter helped her.
“Not sure if you know about it, but I’m the Gym Leader of Veilstone City,” she talked with them while trying to pet their heads, with Buneary being the only one out of the two who trusted her enough to do that. As Elekid moved right next to the cheerful rabbit, the pink-haired gal went back to talk about who she was and what happened yesterday, making an emphasis on how it was the first time in a long time since she felt motivated to fight against one of the challenges of her gym.
At first, Maylene wasn’t sure that the Elekid and Buneary were listening to her, thinking they were only concentrated in the Poké Puffs they were eating, but after she looked back at the two small Pokémon, she found out that not only they were listening, but were interested in what she was saying. Smiling again, the short-haired gal gave them the last few Poké Puffs she had for them to enjoy.
“I have to go again, but I promise to come more often. I would love to see you two again and to know more about you,” Maylene said while petting Buneary’s head. As for Elekid, she smiled at him, making the electric-type Pokémon smirk. It was her goal to win the confidence of those two and to make them feel better after being abandoned yet, Maylene still had to continue with her own training and her job as a Gym Leader.
For the next couple of days, the pink-haired gal finally added something new to her routine, which helped her with the way she was. Maylene still had a few issues related to certain reactions and her own emotions, but after each morning on which she would see the two small Pokémon, she came back to her dojo, feeling fresh and motivated. Even the trainers that she fought against commented on how she was, mentioning that not only they admired her as a Gym Leader, but admired how she was.
Maylene wasn’t the only one who was feeling better as Elekid and Buneary also felt the same. The cheerful rabbit was always eager to meet nice trainers and was happy to become close with the Gym Leader. On the other hand, the small electric Pokémon was more serious, but after Maylene showed that her true self was someone nice and caring, he stopped being too reserved and even let her give him the same kind of affection as Buneary. Seeing the pink-haired gal each morning was always good, happy to have a nice moment and enjoy the sweets she always carried with her.
One morning, as usual, the two waited close to the lake, hoping to see Maylene and have another time together. They waited for a while, but after sunrise came, the two small Pokémon were left disappointed by the fact that the Gym Leader didn’t come. Remembering what she talked about, her own training and the trainers she had to fight against daily, Elekid and Buneary wondered if she was busy that day and while both were a bit hurt to be left behind, they understood that she might have been with something important and instead of feeling bad, they stopped thinking about that.
The next few mornings were the same, with the two waiting for Maylene, hoping that she would come and delight them with her presence, but in the end, she never came. Ever since their trainers abandoned them, Elekid and Buneary had a hard time trusting in other trainers and they thought the pink-haired gal would never do that. The cheerful rabbit still tried her best to think that she was busy with something, but as Elekid was the most affected by being left behind, he remained silent, going back to his serious attitude and only idea of protecting her and him.
Still thinking about being left behind, Buneary decided to go back to the lake after days of not passing by. She didn’t tell the small electric Pokémon yet, he was aware about what she was doing and soon joined her in the place that they used to enjoy. Even if he was hurt, Elekid still protected Buneary and wanted to show the cheerful rabbit that they still had the other. Just as they were ready to leave the lake as sunset was coming, the two Pokémon were surprised to see that the pink-haired gal came back.
“Hi,” Maylene said quietly. Once again, the Pokémon had different reactions. Buneary was shocked yet happy to see her again while Elekid remained firm, moving in front of the cheerful rabbit just in case she might hurt them. The way they reacted, with one being happy and one not trusting her, were things she expected upon returning. The short-haired gal felt bad for what she did and came back to patch things up and more. Wanting to show them that she still was the same gal they knew, she took a box of Poké Puffs and offered it to them. “I’m sorry for not coming back. Was with a few things in my head and needed some time to think.”
Elekid and Buneary eyed at the box of sweets before looking at each other, unsure if they should go with it or not. As Maylene was aware that not coming affected them, she remained silent, doing her best to not break down as she couldn’t stop thinking about what she did. In the end, the cheerful rabbit was the one who took the box, but instead of going back where Elekid was, she stayed close to the pink-haired gal, smiling as she looked at her while eating the Poké Puff. The cute Pokémon’s reaction made her feel a bit calmer, glad that at least one of them was happy with her presence, but as she still had to solve their issue, Maylene took one deep breath before explaining what happened.
“I know I did wrong by leaving like that and I came back as not only I want to see you again, but I want to invite you to where I live. I couldn’t stop thinking about how hard it might be for the two of you to be abandoned and I want to help,” the short-haired gal said while sitting down, putting herself close to the two small Pokémon, but even with that, Elekid still remained firm. The only reason why he even ate one of those sweets was because Buneary offered one and he even smiled for her. Seeing that he was more hurt than she expected, Maylene took one last deep breath before talking with the Pokémon. “I’m not like those trainers, I take good care of my Pokémon and I want to give you the same treatment as the two of you. Please, forgive me. I promise I will never do this to you or any other Pokémon again. Leaving someone behind is bad, I know, I also don’t like when that happens and what I did hurt you. Just, please, forgive me and give me a second chance.”
Seeing that she was close to breaking down, Buneary put the box of Poké Puffs down before holding Maylene’s arm. Even after being left behind and feeling hurt, the cheerful rabbit still looked at the pink-haired gal with good eyes and didn’t like seeing her like that. Her smile helped Maylene feel calmer and by the way she was looking at her, Buneary wanted to give her another chance, the difficult thing was convincing Elekid to do the same.
“You won’t be left behind again, I promise,” she said in a last attempt at convincing the small electric Pokémon, who remained serious. Looking at the cheerful rabbit again and the way she smiled, Elekid smiled back at her before picking up the box of sweets and walking where the two girls were. He still had some doubts about the pink-haired gal, but he trusted Buneary and if she trusted Maylene then he trusted in her too. Happy with the outcome, she hugged the two Pokémon tightly, glad to know that she received a second chance and that they forgave her. “Thank you.”
As she came back to her dojo to introduce Elekid and Buneary to their new home, they also got to meet the rest of Maylene’s team, who all were happy to see them. Although the pink-haired gal’s team only consisted of fighting-type Pokémon, she still made the cheerful rabbit and serious Pokémon part of her team, deciding to give them the same kind of treatment. Maylene also decided to give them nicknames to make them feel more special, with Buneary being called Veena and Elekid Sterling.
Her time going to the lake was a good one as not only did the pink-haired gal feel better, but she also met a duo of Pokémon that reminded them of herself. Like the duo, she was small, but had a lot to offer and the same was for those two. Even after their problem, they still were close, with Veena and Sterling glad to finally have a good trainer that would care for them and give them unconditional love. Maylene never expected that things would end like that, but after a long time feeling down, she was happy about meeting Veena and Sterling.
Finally, she was happy again and was looking forward to her next day as a Gym Leader.
