So a while back, my fiance
WolfgerLion64 introduced me to another VTuber named CorgiCam. He is quite hilarious much like another VTuber I watch - WhiskyDing0 - though gets heckled a lot for being "short" (which I honestly think part of him does enjoy, but most of the jokes thrown at his height have all been said before, and peeve him). He does collabs with other VTubers, like his wife, among others, and gets into back-and-forth moments with his AI "son" - Cork, a shark-corgi-demon hybrid. Needless to say, I enjoy watching him, especially on community nights where there's song requests and community participation. Go check him out at https://www.twitch.tv/corgicam if you haven't. Just bring some humorous A-Game if you are gonna needle him with height jokes 9w9;
Anyway, normally, I would draw subjects "As Is" to get a feel for their look and design, but Corgi's look was simplistic enough that any kind of style would fit him, and gave me something I could easily jump into...something that's different from the Gargoyles I drew, who have a more distinct look to them even if their design is simple. As for a motivation, over the course of a few streams (including today's), Corgi and Cork gave some answers that immediately got my artistic juices flowing and thought - "What if Corgi was in Final Fantasy XIV?" While the idea was somewhat already in my head to have Corgi as an Arcanist with Cork being his "carbuncle" pet, Cork responding to a prompt asking him about his favorite "legendary" dragon with "Bahamut" sold me instantly on the idea of making Corgi an adventurers look that would fit him and the Summoner Job.
My aim was to combine elements that I liked about Corgi's costumes as well as elements that he liked or identified with. My initial hook on this design was his hoodie and Hooter's Megaplex crop top (minus the Hooter's bit of course X3), creating a hoodie with some light armored elements that kept his abdomen exposed. The pants was a bit troublesome for me in that he takes pride in his behind (must be a corgi thing 9w9) and wanted to try and do a baggy-pants thing with him, though I can easily see a pants-less variant (obviously leaving out naughty bits per his request). As for any accessories, that's a bit of a toss up - I could easily see anything from his emblem to Chicken Nuggets (his channel's currency) or some shiny bling of any variety, though I do try to include something that would fit him personally (i.e. birthstone).
The book was a pretty solid concept for me - designed to be held like a choral music folder (hence the finger hoop on the spine), with the front and back covers bearing his emblem in the center of a vortex like what's depicted on the back of Yu-Gi-Oh cards (he did competitive YGO a while back), with the border featuring Pokeballs in the corner (he's an avid collector of Pokemon Cards). When the book opens, a holographic glow in the shape of a corgi head would appear around the edges of the book, either by built in aesthetics or (the most logical explanation) channeling of aether.
This is the first time I've ever drawn this specific breed of dog, and trying to keep a "diminutive" look about him wasn't easy since I don't draw short statured characters often (and Corgi, if you're reading this, that's not a knock on your height; so chill 9w9). So trying to get that look down without making it humorously off balance was a bit of a challenge. The "shortest" statured character I've drawn so far would be Bronx from Gargoyles, which was much more difficult in that he was fully feral, which I also don't draw often, so that was a complete double whammy for me...but I digress.
I think I succeeded; while this isn't the final draft of this Arcanist/Summoner look for him, I have the general aesthetics down. And now, on to drawing out his companion, Cork, and then, after that--hopefully--a more cleaner, devoted, action packed piece that puts all the elements together.
Stay tuned!
