Character

Mariann was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia. Although she may look like a kangaroo, she's actually an alien, an Iyer, a background she would grow a troublesome relationship with. Nonetheless, she blended in with the rest of the peers, and no one suspected her alien origins, even herself.

When she got sex education in her teenage years, she discovered that being a null is actually rare. She asked her parents about the matter and to her shock, they revealed all three of them were aliens. They revealed a seam in their neck (holding [REDACTED] inside), telling Mariann she will get one when she becomes mature. This, however, disgusted Mariann, and dreaded the day she'd become an adult.

Mariann has tried to hide her condition with some minor magic in her adult years and served in the military. She liked the routine the work offered, as it gave a grip to her life. She's never seen in public without her choker to hide her seam. However, the secret if her alien background was slowly eating her up inside, especially when from time to time she had to deal with "the Urge", as she would call it (and dread it). Only after First Contact, she was willing to share her secret with a limited group of people, mostly her doctor and counsellor.

When she was assigned to the Pioneer as a quartermaster, the first captain of the ship, Patrick Higgs, recommended her to go into therapy with Lydia, who diagnosed her with "species dismorphia". She identifies her as a Terran kangaroo, trapped in a body of an alien. Lydia told her that species-shifting between Terrans and aliens was still very much in its infancy, and too risky for her to try out at that time. Lydia tried to give her some confrontation therapy, separating the head and body in these sessions like any Iyer can, hoping that if Mariann cannot become the species she wanted to be, at least maybe help her accept the species she is better. So far, this has been very difficult for her. To the rest of the crew, most people would know no better that she was a kangaroo. However, since Cobenino became captain, she was willing to come out as an Iyer, and when the reaction to the reveal was rather muted, it felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. She found that now she didn't have to hide this part of her identity anymore, making friends was easier. She is still hoping she finds a partner some day, no matter what species they are...

We didn't have a quartermaster before? We do have one now! Mariann is underneath actually a more NSFW character than I usually make, but there's enough SFW things about her to describe as a deeper character, and I can use her in more slice-of-life settings.
Also, Mariann is posing here with the Terran Fleet Operations division uniform. I'm slowly transitioning my characters into the Terran Fleet uniform style.
