Littlefoot at the Burning Mountain's Foot
🦕 Back during Halloween, I decided to implement a Land Before Time theme into my work, combining it with the Halloween theme by including some horror elements into it. This I thought worked for the time being, but not so when viewed in the span of an entire year. The picture, though recognizable because of Littlefoot's body features, felt rather col, due to the very horror elements I put in for the festive period -- it felt a bit... fan-made, and not exactly in a particularly inviting way. So I decided to do another take on the iconic young Apatosaurus travelling towards a volcano deep in the prehistoric jungle. And although I did have a rough time getting the shape of the neck and facial features just right, I eventually managed to do them in just the way for them to appear cute, yet not ~too~ bubbly.
Although, come to think of it, I might've just been steering in the Halloween picture's exact opposite direction with this one. But believe me -- having to keep track of the official character's main features while also having to put your own spin on that character while you're drawing it for it to still resemble your own art style, is hard. And it's not gonna be my last attempt, I can pretty much guarantee you that!

I imagine that trying to balance your style with the original style of a character's design is extremely difficult to do. The big reason, in my opinion, is how the original style is still a unique method that the original artist, or artists, were able to do. However, unless you were a part of the character's initial design, your personal technique will always bubble-up when drawing any character. Some people can come close to remaking the original, but close is the best you can really get without resorting to tracing and/or stressing yourself over drawing lines and shapes that you just cannot do through your natural talent.

I admire how you are making multiple versions / iterations of this work. I feel it helps to encourage self-esteem when trying to do something that is a great challenge to complete. Each attempt, with proper time spaced between each effort, should continue to give you a better result. You could even see each version of the art you do as a path of personal development with your talent.

When I still had eyesight, I found I could best draw a character if I started with their nose. I drew Scorchios, from Neopets, Yosh, and Yoshies all through starting at the nose and adding certain shapes to make them work out. I got fairly good with my style before I lost too much vision to do anything anymore. Interestingly, of all things I drew on a character, I found making a diaper to be the most beneficial as I could never draw hips without them looking super-duper flat.

Overall, I just want to compliment you on never giving up on making this image the way you want it to come out. Keep up the great work and appreciation for LBT. :)
