In the 70's GMPTE placed an order for 85 EMU's from Boeing Vertol. They were put to work on Metro services in Manchester and worked along side the BR Class 316 PEP's on the Picc-Vic tunnel.
Due to the planned introduction of the Class 717 EMU's under BeeNetwork's fleet replacement plan, the BR Class 353's will be retired and either scrapped or moved elsewhere. Two units are already on Sodor with RailLink's BlueConnect.
[UPDATE: 1/12/2024]: These units will be replaced by the Class 718 instead from Hitachi.
