What we meant by real science fiction was a big deal in the 70s. Older fans (say 35) tended to disparage media SF as mere space opera on film, lacking the soul and depth of development of the written word. Younger fans just flocked to Star Wars or watched Dr. Who and didn't care where Captain Kirk's torn shirts was really character development or not ... it was exciting. In time, pretty much everyone got over the issue, with the value of good quality media SF no longer being in dispute. Of course, most media SF *was* still superficial, but that was because most things in media are superficial. In this drawing I was placing Saara Mar clearly in the "I'm real" camp, and not in the same camp as Luke Skywalker or Spiderman. Come to thing of it... that's only the truth, isn't it?

Gatekeeping becomes necessary because there are always narcissists who are looking for a group they can become "Leaders" of. Doesn't even matter what the group is about if it can be subverted to being about their cult of personality. Like how Anime is now being infested by people who don't like the Fanservice that has been part of the Japanese animation culture since the beginning, and are now trying to dictate what Japanese culture "should" be back to the studios.
I was involved in a fan group in the early 2000's making a star control sequel... We had a guy move in who because he was a pro audio artist who thus "knew business" and "how a project should be managed", figured he should be in charge of art... He did end up in charge and started treating us all like employees. Unpaid employees. Everyone walked. Years of work down the drain.
