Seems like the professor's more effort than he's worth

All those book-smart types never seem to realize that reading about the jungle and being in the jungle are entirely different things. But of course that never stops them from showing up anyway trying to make the next big discovery, and babysitting them is a lot easier than running all over the place trying to find them after they've been missing for more than a week.

Besides, how often does one get to say they saw the head of a prestigious college being dragged away by a bunch of wild Skorupis?
