Digging into the tote, under all the old letters was a variety of patches and medals. One odd item that made it back was the pin off a grenade.
The piece I am most curious about is the ribbon with the green stripes. If you look close there is a tiny silver star in the middle.

That's the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. The star is a Campaign star.

To add a couple more details. It means he fought in the European theater during WW2, in at least one campaign (which doesn't narrow down which one).

Actually, he served in North-Western Europe after D-Day. That Big A, that's the Patch for the 1st U.S. Army that went from Normandy to Germany.

I'd just discovered that the smaller A is the patch for Patton's Third Army, so, at some point, his unit was transferred from 1st to 3rd Army.

Just found out that the award next to the sgt. stripes is the Army Good Conduct Medal.

And the last medal, the one under the first army patch, is the World War II Victory Medal.

Also, seems the star on top of the campaign medal means that he participated in at least two campaigns in that part of the world.
