Basking in the warmth from the flames of the giant shipwrecker crab and cursed half-elf twins the party had defeated and ceremoniously set ablaze, a weight felt lifted off of Urrsiki's shoulders.
From her side, a gust of air breezed past her and reappeared her secretive best friend cloaked in white, still tired and solemn. Yus was missing for many years of her relatively short life; once she had left the forest and left behind the ruins of her village, he was presumed to be dead like all others. Blackened ruins scar his arms, proof of his existing allegiance to an apocalyptic prophet though not believed to be wanted in Urrsiki's eyes. It was not more than a few days since she rediscovered someone was alive from her childhood.
"Well... I guess I can't take back ashes," quipped Yus, quietly.
"Suppose not. Are you... free, now?"
"You remember what I told you before, right?"
"Y-Yeah, about the Oathbreaker? I'll- We'll kill him. I'll free you, I promise."
"I'm... surprised you haven't killed me yet."
"What? Why would I?"
"...You still haven't put two and two together, have you?" Yus' breath caught in his throat, agonizing guilt strewn across his face.
"What? What is it? Tell me, Yus, don't hold me in suspense-" Urrsiki turned towards him, her stomach turning inside.
"I... Irraka- I did that. I killed everyone you knew."
Urrsiki launched at Yus and grabbed him by the collar and shook him violently, tears in her eyes and panic in her voice, "What do you mean you killed them? What did you do, Yus? What happened?"
"It was an accident! I didn't mean to! I was playing around with magic and it opened a portal, I had connections to planes I didn't realise I had and it all went wrong. That's why the efreeti came." He barked back, unbottling the crushing remorse he held for years. "I had to leave, I had no where to go, they took me in when no one else would. I owe a debt to them."
"You dont have to be with them- I- You- The only person you owe a debt to is yourself, to forgive yourself, it was an accident, you don't have to serve a cult." Urrsiki wept, trying to convince herself she could forgive and forget if it meant having her best friend back. It wasn't his fault, it wasn't his fault, but they're all dead, they're dead because of him-
A few seconds more, and Yus disappeared into thin air. Urrsiki was alone again, just like she was when she was a child.
She crumpled to her knees and sobbed.
