my sweet spot for storytelling in videogames
i love a thought-provoking story, but i'll settle for just a competently written one. or just a fun one.
which, most games are still not even capable of.
also to nip complaints from pokemon fans in the bud, imma copy/paste my comment from DA over here:
for such a giga franchise, the good games are few and far between. in fact i can give an exact list of pokemon games i consider to not be bland kiddy shit:
- Gen 1, 2, 5 (incl. their remakes like FiredRed and Heartgold, NOT the Eeevee Switch remake tho jeez. as far a mainline goes, Sun and Moon was also alright i guess, yay for interdimensional ghost jellyfish villain and unethical poke experiments that put Mewtwo to shame.)
- Pokemon Snap (again, not the Switch thing)
- Pokemon Colosseum + Gale of Darkness (just the best Pokemon games ever, really)
- Pokepark 2 (YOU get o play a pokemon and that's just awesome, also surprisingly solid story)
- Pokemon Conquest (pokemon + Fire Emblem works surprisingly well)
- Pokemon Pinball (it's a solid pinball game, ain't nothing wrong with that)
- that one Mystery dungeon game on the GBA...or was it NDS? i don't recall which one. had an actual plot and almost made me cry near the end, anyway...
there's the gameboy TCG game too, but the TCG itself is such a RNG trashfire. i can't in good conscience call that game good. i tried Pokemon Ranger once, but it had very tedious & slow gameplay form what i recall.

if you want a story rich game i suggest looking into "to the moon" gamewise its nothing special as its very linear. and very little replayability. and being made in RPG maker not great viuals. though i think it really makes good use of the assets but the story is heart wrenching at times and very great twists along the way.
I only played Undertale to completion out of that list, but that falls firmly in the "solid" category. It's very well written, has little to no BS in the gameplay department. And probably one of the only games where "your choices matter" felt not like a completely empty promise. You do feel sorry for the little monsters you kill, since every one of them has personality and is memorable. The only thing that bugs me personally about Undertale is that it caters too hard to the social media generation. I don't care for current event stuff in general, much prefer timeless stories that exist in their own world out of time. Also, a little too heavy in parodying other games/media, ESPECIALLY Earthbound. ("Tsunderplane"? Ugh, not funny. Temmy is just Mr. Saturn. The whole balcony scene with Mettaton was the same balcony scene as FF6. I could go on.)
I did play chapter 1 of delta Rune, feels like a fanfic of Undertale and i lost interest fast. I will give it credit that it seemingly tries to be more its own thing than Undertale. Undertale is, in essence, an Earthbound fanfic.
I've only seen bits of Death Stranding, as i do intend to play it eventually and don't wanna spoil everything. It's a Kojima game tho, so it's probably on the same level as Xenogears: naively dumb, like it was written by a nerdy 5 year old, kinda pretentious, but also creative AF and just a crazy ride worth experiencing.
