A brief evolution or rather, my feeble attempts at modeling General Electric and General Dynamics as well as Dillon Aero's versions of the 12.7x99mm 50BMG BIGGIE minigun.
On the left is my take on GE's early model called the GECAL50
Directly to the right is General Dynamic's slight overhaul of GE's original. What's not shown [because I'm not a competent enough modeler] is the horrendous mass of gears, feed sprockets and thingamajigs which Gen Dynamics put on the GECAL50 to make it more reliable.
2nd from the right is my early attempt at mocking up Dillon's highly reworked and vastly improved 503 which the GECAL evolved into.
Far right is my current iteration, complete with a revised hand-grip and frame suitable for a shoulder sling and man-portablility... sort of...
As to why Dillon's work looks so much different than anything before? Well that's due to Dillon's impressive engineering and almost total overhaul of the system. Both the drive section of the weapon, as well as the drive method are incompatible with either GE or Gen Dy's work. With Dillon, everything on the chamber bolts side of the weapon was redone to house all of the driving hardware, drive motor, pinion, rotor driving gear, and de-linking feeder drive have all been combined at the back of the rotor case and in so doing, Dillon have completely eliminated all of the mechanical clusterfuckery that plagued GE and Gen Dy's efforts to make the 50BMG Gatling effective much less reliable.
Shed belt links and spent casings are ejected from the weapon DIRECTLY without the need for the flustercluck of sprockets Gen Dy later incorporated into the weapon. I would show actual image proof of this but, considering how the new 503 and the M134 which Dillon still produces are current equipment for our armed forces... it'd be like doing spy work for the other side and I AIN'T DOING THAT !!! As a fan of Dillon's work, and of the 134 and 503 and the legacy weapons they're based on, this is about as close as I'm comfortable with sharing, on their differences without being an ass or a spy...
Speaking of which... Now now Jabbers... Stop aiming your minis and your rockets at me... I already said I'm not a spy! xDD
Anyhow this image can also be thought of as a bit of archive stoofs from me, showing my early to current work with what I think is the coolest Gatling in current production / use. Sure everyone loves the minigun, I mean how many games including TF2 feature it?... But how cool is a mini... errr... BIGGIE gun that shoots 50BMG as fast as an MG42?... Yeah that's right,1500 rounds a second, select-able... and won't jam when shot in short bursts either !!!
I want one!
HUBBS WANTS ONE!
Only question Dillon? How much?! xDD
Anyway Gatling by Richard Jordan Gatling the OG of dakka!
General Electric... yeah the Fridge company... yeah they made the GECAL50
General Dynamics?.. Well they sort of tinkered with the GECAL, called it the GAU-19 and put it in the field... Boys who served kinda have mixed reactions to it, but it's not my place to say.
But HUZZAH Dillon hath dun gutten mit der 503 ja!
