Last year's US Open of Surfing was kinda sad.
The waves were small and the crowds were smaller.
The big names headed to Tahiti for some extreme
big wave contest or another. The wind was fierce and
blew onshore all day. The snow cone man's compressor
quit. No one wants a slush cone and the crowd was surly.
The vendors suffered the most. The poor t-shirt guy had 5,000
unopened boxes of hoodies and more shirts than Tom Jones,
but the tourists were not impressed. Even a half price sale only
brought a drizzle of customers.
So he hired a dog.
Well, not really hired. In exchange for 10 minutes of standing in front
of his booth, I got a free shirt. And it was fun!
I felt like a carnival barker as I tried to rope in the folks.
Admittedly, some were repelled by a large, naked dog hawking
t-shirts, but most either smiled or had a look at the merchandise.
And lots of them bought a shirt. Or two. One for them and one
for their dog at home. I guess.
I'll be back at the US Open this year, hoping for another free shirt.
And maybe a hoodie.
I know he's got 4,999 boxes left.

*waggwagg* If I buy 10 shirts, do I get 10 waggs?? It was very nice of you to help out the vender like that. It is so nice to see suiters using their cute powers for good and not evil! I only wish I was there to help with the shirt pushing! I hope this year's surfing competition is better and there is some better wave action. Just don't try to surf yourself in suit, if you wipe out you'll end up in an anchor competition. *tail angels in the sand*
